Where in the three towns is this (2)

Let's see who remembers this scene somewhere in the three towns - it's changed a wee bit.

Hughie,

I think it's the old Calley line near the Dubbs farm.

Caledonian Railway Cutting, Ardrossan. Ardrossan Academy is behind the trees at the top left. The bridge in the centre is the aqueduct carrying the Stanley (Galloway) Burn.

Tom is right. I well remember the Irish boat trains chugging along there to Glasgow in the Summer evenings. Apparently this route was said to have been originally chosen for the canal from Ardrossan to Glasgow, but with the advent of the steam engine the Clyde became easier for these non-sailing ships to navigate more safely and the canal plan became redundant.

Hughie,

I understood that the canal was meant to run along the line of Canal St, thus its name.

Hi John, I believe Canal Street in Saltcoats was named after the former canal that was once thereabouts and used to transport Stevenston coal to Saltcoats Harbour for export.

Aha ! So there have been two canal projects in the 3-towns. Didn't know that.

Took this from the same spot as the first photo, only looking directly down. Anyone remember as a wee boy being dared to walk that pipe? I never did see anyone do it. Might be a lot less scary now that someone's put a mattress at the bottom to land on rather than railway lines.

Apparently, Meg did walk along this pipe when she was young (but not when she was a 'wee boy'). And, just for the sake of clarity, she has never had a job as a 'pipe walker' :D
I'm still saving up for a signature.

It was the "exit" route if you were bunking off school - but the pipe looked a lot more robust and less rusty then.

I'm in awe, Meg. We never attempted it 'cause when we thought about it we were already knackered as we headed back from the Saltcoats pool up Hunter Avenue. Odd looking pipe though. It looks like it's just an outer metal coating protecting other pipes and perhaps cables inside.

Never really had a problem with heights Hughie, or at least I never thought I had til George and I visited a fantastic rope bridge in Northern Ireland (http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-carrickarede" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) - I scampered down onto the bridge - walked 5 steps then FROZE. Poor George had to march me across with my eyes shut, then march back again with my eyes still shut and hanging onto him for dear life!
