Re: NON-SCOTTISH/BRITISH SURNAMES
I went to school with a Gavin Pllu ( dyksemains/ardrossan accademy ) in the same class was Linda Pluu ( cousins)from Simpson Drive in Saltcoats if memory serves her dad a an unusual first name. this was in the late 70's early 80's.David Young wrote:I remember a Gavin Pllu when I was at school in the early 50's. Also a 'Cocky' Pllu who my father taught to play the flute. Ring any bell anyone?
I think Lindas mother still lives in Simpson Drive

"Tortalani" - I think you actually mean TORTOLANO. This was the Italian family who owned the Cafe Melbourne.
It was actually owned by Mrs Tortolano whose maiden name was Marietta Del Greco. Louis, whose actual name was Luigi worked the fish and chip shop and also the amusements arcade. But it was Mrs Tortolano who owned all the properties.
It was called Cafe Melbourne after Melbourne Terrace where the family lived.
Jim McCreadie mentions the Pllus who lived across from him in Dippin Place. I remember the children.
They were called Margaret, Anna and Edward.

I also went to school with Louie Scott, the family lived in the middle of Glasgow street, at the corner of Barr street, they had a business teaching learner drivers around the mid sixties.

Re: NON-SCOTTISH/BRITISH SURNAMES
Further to the local Olufsen family of Danish origin whom I mentioned on Page 1 of this topic, I've found an article on the "Ardrossan Ships " site about the first Mr Oluf Olufsen and how he came to settle in the area.It seems he was a seaman ,who took up residence in Saltcoats after his ship was torpedoed in 1917, and later lived in Barr Street, Ardrossan. His son joined the Royal Navy and the family continued to live locally. The full article is on
