The Lost Village of Ardeer - video online

Post by Hughie »

Had an email from Eddy Burns about this video he's made. Very professional and well worth a look no matter which of the three towns you come from.

The video's called, 'ARDEER - In the Shadow of the World's Largest Explosives Factory'.

I watched this very informative and well made video on YouTube and recognised more than a few locations visited by the presenter; most especially the harbour and pit-head structure which, when I was a boy, was known as "Auchenharvie Swamp".
Ah, memories of many years ago!

Remember it well, Jim. On leaving Saltcoats from Canal Street heading to Stevenston and passing under the Caley bridge, the swamp waste land was on the right - where the golf course now is. At that time nearby was also the smoky, smelly Saltcoats coup, which often brought complains from the bottom end of Stevenston and the Saltcoats Esplanade Cottages, depending on the wind.

Hi Hughie, did you, like me, catch frogs and attempt to gather swan eggs in the swamp?

Only every viewed it from upstairs on an A1 Bus, Jim. And smelt the coup while visiting family in Esplanade cottages or while at Campbell park watching the football. :)

I passed the link to a Melbourne western suburbs group which encompasses the suburb of Ardeer and the former ICI nearby. Here's a link to an earlier topic about the source of the Ardeer name: viewtopic.php?p=161352#p161352
