1855 A Special Year for Family Researchers

Post by Hughie »

1855 Was the first year of official recording of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Scotland. For that particular year much more was noted on the BMD certificates than in later years such as:

Birth Certificates
Other children born to the same parents, and whether they were living or deceased
The ages of both parents
The birthplaces of both parents
The parents’ usual residence
The baptismal name (if different from the name they were registered under)

Example: The birth of my gt grandmother's sister in Stevenston in 1855 for details see this earlier post.

Marriage Certificates
The birthplace and when and where registered of each spouse. WOW!
The number of former marriages of each spouse
The number of children by those marriages.

Death Certificates
The deceased’s place of birth
How long were they living in the district or parish
A list of their children in order of birth, including both their names and ages

BMD intimations from 1855 from the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald are being transcribed in our members' area.
