JOHN STEELE

Post by Penny Tray »

I was catching up this evening on the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald initimations. Is this the John Steele who, along with his wife Noreen, tried so hard over the years to solve the mysteries of HMS DASHER?

I was saddened to hear of the passing of John Steele. Condolences to Noreen and family. John did a wonderful job on bringing the tragedy of HMS Dasher to the notice of the locals. My late brother, Bobby McCallum forwarded a copy of both books to me, "The Tragedy of HMS Dasher" and "Whispers of Horse Island". Both signed by John and the latter also by Noreen.

The Horse Island book solved one of the things that was often on our minds. Where did the coal we used to gather washed up on the North Shore near the Shell Mex come from? We called it sea-coal, thinking it came from an underwater reef nearby. We never realised that quiet a few vessels exporting Stevenston coal to Ireland all those years ago had come to grief around the Horse Island.
