Young, James on 28/12/1855 at the Railway Tavern, Byres of Kilwinning. In the 73rd year of his age. Deceased was highly respected by all who knew him. He was the eldest of a family of ten, and the first whom death has taken hence. The other nine are still alive. They seemed to have borne a charmed existence – as if they had been precluded from the common fate of man, or death had forgotten his sullen trust. Thousands are the diseases and accidents which are incidental to man from his birth, and that ten of one family should live until their united ages amount to near 700 years, is an incident, we may safely say, without precedent. How few families, if there are any, but have a sister or a brother dead, and how comparatively few there are, but have to mourn some loved one on a foreign shore; but, to add to the singular preservation of the lives of the members of this family, is the fact, that they were never so far separate but that one could visit all the others in one day. Scotchmen are proverbial for travelling, and the inducements that are held forth in the fertile plains of America, the golden regions of California and Australia, have drawn thousands of our fellow-countrymen thither, but this family have remained intact, as if when death did not separate, they would not do so voluntarily.
