Ardrossan Academy former pupils: academic and other successes 1963-71

Post by down south »

Beginning in 1964, the Ardrossan Academy school magazine began recording successes of former pupils at universities and colleges. At this stage they were recording only final awards. Of necessity the list is in arrears, that is it refers to the previous session, 1962-63.

I've expanded some of the less familiar initials where I can, but unfortunately I couldn't find out what a CMB was.

CMB - Central Midwife Board - used by a nurse who is also a qualified midwife.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

I had a sneaking suspicion that you would have the answer, PT; thank you. Seems a lot more likely than the other suggestion!

Re: Ardrossan Academy former pupils: academic successes 1963-71

Post by down south »

Here is the list from the 1971 school magazine, referring mostly to awards in the session 1969-70.

NEWS FROM THE UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES AND HOSPITALS

Before last session's awards are listed, mention must be made of the signal honour bestowed in October 1970 on one of the Academy's notable former pupils. When last autumn the University of Glasgow marked its centenary on Gilmorehill by conferring honorary degrees on sixteen persons whose distinguished careers had contributed to the welfare and reputation of the University, John Smith McEwan was one of the graduands who received the degree of Doctor of Laws.

Dr McEwan, a former dux of the Academy, who later graduated Master of Arts at Glasgow University with first class honours in Classics, and thereafter Bachelor of Laws, and who is now Director of Education for Lanarkshire, is the eldest son of the late W S McEwan , for many years Principal Teacher of Classics in the Academy, where he also served as Deputy Rector before becoming headmaster at Galston.

Those former pupils who can recall with affection and gratitude Dr McEwan's father, necessarily take special pleasure in the high distinction conferred on his son by William McEwan's own Alma Mater, and in offering Dr McEwan our congratulations , we remember also the man who first directed his attention and ours , to Virgil's never-to-be-forgotten half-line : sic itur ad astra.
