Inside the Waverley 2007

Post by Hughie »

In 2007 these are some of the images I was asked to take by an Australian friend who captained a paddle Steamer on the Murray River in Echuca. His mum was our Aussie town's district nurse and became a close friend - she was born in Glasgow street corner of Seaton Street and the family left for Australia when she was about 3 years old. She named her son Arran as that's where his grandparents came from.

She’s had a complete boiler refit Hughie and believe it or not, is sailing “doon the watter” for four weeks at the end of August. We really thought she’d had it but the public has raised enough (think it was over £2m) for all the repairs.

Love a day out on her. The last time we went was a summers evening two years ago from Ayr down to Girvan then round Ailsa Craig and back.

Loved sailing in her, Meg. Apparently according to the the following paddle steamer site the Waverley was in Ardrossan earlier this month - Lovely earlier photo there too, showing it entering Ardrossan harbour with Arran behind it.

Great photos Hughie those were the real engines with the big crank and piston rods on view. I remember as a boy being disappointed if they were not on view. On some paddle steamers like the “Talisman” the engines were enclosed and not as exciting as the big piston rods thrusting back and forth. Memories :D

It really is a mess isn’t it. All the money collected for the refurb then this happens. Seemingly after repairing the bow, they’ll need to check every nut and bolt (or rivet) in the whole vessel to make sure it’s safe. Such a shame..
