Nobel's People - documentary about ICI Ardeer in 1988

Post by Mitchy »

Interesting promotional film about ICI Ardeer in 1988. I'm sure some forum members will recognise a few faces.

Mitchy,

Although there were plenty of opportunities to do so, particularly towards the end of the film, I didn't readily recognise anyone I knew, but I thoroughly enjoyed the film itself.

Thanks for that, Mitchy. As Penny said, there are plenty of faces shown near the end when the workers were heading home, but none were known to me - maybe when I'm fully awake I'll have another go at it. Wife recognised the soldering of the fuse heads at the 9.10 mark on the video - she did that back around 1964 before we left for Australia. Nice to see the swans at 13.45. :)

Hi PT, I recognised one of the Firefighters and one of the Mechy Fitters. I think I saw someone I know walking out the gate at the end but will confirm with him next time I see him. Great video though. I never worked there myself, but it was such a huge part of so many local people's lives. Even to this day there are a sizeable number of ICI pensioners in the three towns. The current occupants of the site (www.chemringenergetics.co.uk) still employ a few hundred people as far as I know.

It makes you sad. What this town would have continued to be had ICI not gone out of it.

I remember in the 1970s the shops that thrived then :

Ironmongers (used to be given the duty of picking paraffin up for mum - bet they would not let kids do this now).

Bojangles : an expensive shop in its time.

Pick n Save.

Chinese restaurant - beautiful restaurant in its time.

Munro Electrics.

Thankfully, there are still shops left in New Street.

When I was a wee boy I lived in new Street, when the dayshift finished in the factory you couldn't get across the road for about half an hour. Great video I think I recognise a couple of faces.

Although I was never employed at the factory I recognise a ton of folk in the video, some still with us and sadly some not.
Very nostalgic, cheers for posting it Mitchy.

Just out of hospital and recovering from Dengue fever, I got the best tonic I could wish for in the movie. A short scene of my late brother, Hughie, when he was a polis in the factory. Must send this to his family, many many thanks

Alex,

Your brother was the one and only person I thought I recognised but ruled it out because I thought we were looking at office workers. I'm glad you confirmed it.

Thanks PT., I put it on my facebook, 5 of his Sons and Daughters are on there. Can't wait for them to see it. I also recognized the fireman doing the dispatch call, I think Willie ???? his name. Always smiling.
