Stevenston - The bakery at the cross

Post by Mitchy »

What was the name of the large bakery at Stevenston Cross? (the site is currently occupied by Somerfield stores). I seem to recall you could buy rolls and bread there late at night - is that correct?

Hi Wee Shuggie,

Yes it was Morrison's. At least it was in the 1960's. Perhaps later "Wondersoft" took over. Was that the same Morrison who was the local Mayor and lived to be over 100?

Ineed it was Morrisons Bakery! My first job when I left school was feeding the bread oven at Morrisons. The bread "rounds", covered in oil, came to the oven front on a conveyor belt system and were placed in a fixed "tine", much like a huge comb. When the foxed "tine" was full, a second hand-held "tine" with cut-outs opposing the oven "tine" was used to firm the "rounds" in place. Sound complicated? Imagine interlocking two combs with both sets of teeth pointing in the same direction and you've got the idea.

Morrisons Bakery

Post by Big T »

i remember it well as I used to go there for freshly baked bread. By the time I got home my father said that there looked as if a mouse had been at the loaf but that was me picking a hole in the loaf on my way home.
Another thing about the bakery I would take an ashet with the meat in it and they would put on the crust and bake it. What I would give for a piece of Steak Pie this minute. There rolls were great as well but the best rolls were across the street in Patricks Bakery, now they were something.
For those who don;t remember Patricks it is where the Chemist is situated now on the corner of New St and the Cross.
Rant Over.

Hi Everybody,
Ah, fond memories, I remember as a wee boy my uncle Tommy ( McBride ) used to work there and he used to take me to see how they
made things.
I will never forget that great smell of fresh bread, and the cakes !!!!!!
particularly the strawberry tarts.

Thanks for bringing back the memory.
