Threetowners cycling thread
Re: Threetowners cycling thread
Yeah, I've never really cycled after dark, other than once or twice on roads I knew well. This was different. I had my GPS to keep me on the route, but most of the time didn't really need it - plenty of others were doing the run, so there were always a few tail-lights ahead of me to follow.
And you become very aware of sounds around you. There was one stage, going down the tweed valley, where I'm sure we were going alongside the river. Couldn't see it, but could hear it. And then occasional noises from sheep and cows in the fields, and rustles from animals in the bushes.
I think I'd do it again

I've been getting out a couple of times most weeks but all very samey, either Largs or Ayr but this morning I decided on something a wee bit different.
Left Castlepark around 6.30, it was a cracking morning not a breath of wind. Through kilwinning and the 3 toons then turning up the hill at the Alpine stores, kept going up the hill before dropping down past a rather empty looking Munnock reservoir then turning right towards Dalry.
From Dalry I headed back to Kilwinning and up past the cemetery and out to Auchenteber. Turned right again and back to Irvine at the Girdle toll where I pointed myself towards Stewarton and via Kilmaurs I ended up in Kilmarnock.
Through the town and out by Rugby park before heading to Dundonald, Barassie and Troon where I decided that would do me and headed hame to Irvine. This was my longest run of the year so far at 65 miles (Bruce, nowhere close to your 100 miler) but really enjoyed it.

That looks like a great trip!

Bruce, I was thinking about the devil's beef tub when I was cycling up to the Munnoch from the Alpine stores, how do they compare gradient wise?

Re: Threetowners cycling thread
Just had a look at both on Strava.
Both are about the same gradient - 3% - and both are relatively "steady", in that it's a constant climb.
Alpine store to first dam is 3.5km, Devil's Beeftub is 10.5 - so it's 3 times the climb to the dam.
Descent after the beef tub was great - it was pretty much all downhill for the next 25k!
