THE THAMES CONSERVATORS AT THE BRITISH DYNAMITE WORKS

The Conservators of the Thames, at present in Scotland, paid a visit yesterday to the works of the company at Ardeer for the purpose of witnessing the process of manufacturing dynamite, and a series of experiments designed to show the powers, safety, uses, and economy of the explosive.

The party were conveyed by a special train to Ardeer, where they were received by Mr MacRoberts, the resident manager.

THE BURGH MOVEMENT – STEVENSTON

A meeting of those favourable to the formation of the town into a police burgh was held in the Woodside Hall last night – Mr Alexander McGregor, of the Ardeer Foundry, in the chair.

The chairman gave the result of the plebiscite on the question, which showed a clear majority in favour of the scheme.

Rev. A Morris Moodie moved, and Mr George Sinclair seconded, that it is expedient that the town should be formed into a burgh, and that steps be taken to have this carried out.

There was no amendment, and the motion was unanimously carried.

A large committee was appointed to get the resolution carried into effect.

ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, PATRICK McKENNA, a collier residing in Main Street, Stevenston, was charged with having, on the 10th instant, assaulted to the effusion of blood and serious injury to the person of John Kirkwood, Pitheadman, first at the head of No. 4 Pit of Auchenharvie Colliery, and also in Boglemart Street, Stevenston.

The accused pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment.

STEVENSTON ESTABLISHED CHURCH

On Friday evening an anniversary soiree was held in the Parish Church, Stevenston – the Rev. John Grahame, M.A., B.S., pastor, presiding. There was a large attendance.

The chairman, in the course of his address, referred to the position of the church and the various congregational schemes. The statement was of a very gratifying and encouraging character, showing that the church attendance and membership had considerably increased during the twelve months of Mr Grahame’s pastorate.

Revs. Messrs J. D. McCall, Ardrossan; W. Lee Ker, Kilwinning, Forrest, Stevenston; Benvie, Scone; and Patrick, Kilmarnock, afterwards delivered addresses.

The choir of the church, led by Mr Reid, sang several anthems during the evening with good effect.
