NEW JUSTICE OF THE PEACE

On the recommendation of the Earl of Eglinton and Winton, Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, the following gentleman has been added to the Commission of Peace for the county: -

FATAL ACCIDENT

JOHN HIGGINS, (31), brusher, Main Street, Stevenston, was killed at Auchenharvie No. 5 Pit, when an empty runaway hutch ran down and caught him.

FATAL ACCIDENT INQUIRY

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday a fatal accident inquiry was held before Sheriff Mackenzie and a jury into the death of JOHN HIGGINS, miner, New Street, Stevenston, who was fatally injured in No. 5 Pit, Auchenharvie Colliery, on 16 April last, by being struck by a hutch which had accidentally broken away from workings further up the pit.

The jury found accordingly, and added their opinion that sufficient care was not exercised by the men in the workings above to sprag the wheels or use other means to prevent the hutch getting away down the incline.

All the voting papers on this question have been collected with the following result: -
For the burgh, 586; against, 352; neutral, 55 – Majority in favour, 234.

It is expected that the organisers will take steps to get the decision of the Sheriff on the matter.

NORTHERN DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEETING

A stated meeting of the Northern District Committee was held in the Conservative Club Rooms, Kilwinning, yesterday – Major Dalrymple Hay presiding.

With regard to the erection of slaughter-houses, it was agreed that remit be made to the County Councillors and Parish Council representatives of each of the parishes of Beith, Dalry, Kilbirnie, Dreghorn, Dunlop, Stevenston, and West Kilbride to negotiate for sites in these respective parishes, and report.
