GREAT MEETING OF MINERS ON IRVINE MOOR

Yesterday a large meeting of miners from Kilwinning, Stevenston, Irvine, and neighbourhood, took place on Irvine Moor.

From Stevenston, Kilwinning, and some other places under the Messrs Baird & Merry, it was reported that the men, in consequence of the furnaces being damped, were only getting about half time and that their wages were at the rate of 3s 6d per day.

The meeting agreed that every man employed by Messrs Merry & Baird take work at the collieries that gave them 4s per day.

DISTRESSING FATALITY AT ARDEER

At the shooting range at Nobel’s Explosives Factory, Ardeer, Stevenston, an unfortunate accident took place yesterday, by which Mr. Frank Lyall, chemist and superintendent of the laboratories, was fatally shot.

Mr. Lyall had been testing cartridges at the range in the presence of one of the head office officials from Glasgow and a Canadian visitor. There were three assistants to Mr. Lyall, one of whom, who had been fifteen years in the service, was looking after the gun.

The rifle used was a No. 22 magazine, and the range was about ten yards.

Mr. Lyall was standing at the target in the act of changing it, when, through some mistake, a shot was fired, the bullet entering his back, killing him instantly.

The unfortunate affair caused consternation among those at the range.

Mr. Lyall was very popular at the factory, where he had been for twenty years, and his death has caused a widespread feeling of regret. He was in his forty-fourth year, unmarried, and resided at Ailsa View, Stevenston. His parents reside in Dumfries.

A meeting of this association was held in Ayr last night – Mr. J. L. Copland, president, in the chair.

It was decided that the undecided semi-final tie in the county cup competition between Ayr and Kilwinning Eglinton should take place at Stevenston on 2nd March.

ARDEER IRONWORKS

Two of the four furnaces at these ironworks, which belong to Messrs Merry & Cuninghame, have just been relighted after having been damped down for eight or nine months.

The remaining two are about to be fitted up on the most approved gas principle, and will consequently not be in blast for some time.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

At the monthly meeting of this Board – Mr. Donaldson presiding – a letter was read from Mr. Brunton, of the Glasgow & South Western Railway, stating that the Board had encroached on the company’s ground adjoining the new street at Saltcoats Station, and asking what proposal the Board had to make.

The matter was delayed till inquiries are made.

It was reported that the attendance at schools was improving.
