FIRE IN A DRAPER’S SHOP

Early yesterday morning fire was discovered to have broken out in a shop in Alexander Place, Stevenston, occupied by Mr. W. C. Poe, draper.

The discovery was made by some neighbours, who went for the police and gave the alarm before the fire had time to spread. Water was carried in buckets from the burn close at hand and thrown on the flames, extinguishing them. There is a fireplace behind the counter, and the fire, it is supposed had originated near that. Considerable damage was done to the stock and fittings by fire and water, and the large plate glass windows were cracked.

The damage is covered by insurance.

Combination game played on Rugby Park. There was a large crowd of spectators.

A keenly contested game ended in a draw – 2 goals each.

The house in Boglemart Street, Stevenston, belonging to the heirs of the late Mrs. Dick was set up to public roup at the upset price of £130, and was purchased by Mr. Scott, merchant, Kilmarnock, for £160.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

Rev. J. Livingstone presiding.

Plans were submitted for an extension to the Public School, which is at present overcrowded. The proposed extension, costing £300, will form a wing at the rear of the school, and give accommodation for 130 scholars, with a kitchen for lessons in cooking.

An alternative proposal was to convert the old Parochial School into an infant school. Mr. Thomson, architect, reported that this could be done at a cost of £220, giving accommodation for 119 scholars.

It was decided to build the addition to the Public School, as recommended by H.M. Inspector, it being considered more convenient and economical in working.

The plans were ordered to be sent to the Scotch Education Department for Approval.

FOOTBALL – AYRSHIRE LEAGUE
IRVINE v. STEVENSTON THISTLE

The league championship tie between these clubs was played at Irvine on Saturday afternoon.

Irvine won the toss and Stevenston kicked off against a light wind. During the first half of the game Irvine had the best of it, though goals were few and far between.

At half-time the game ended – Irvine 2, Stevenston 1.

The second half had not proceeded far when Stevenston equalised the score, and the supporters of Thistle were confident that the Irvine players would be defeated. That, however, was not to be, for the Irvine side succeeded in securing another goal. Gorman, who was playing centre, while in the act of shooting the ball, was tripped by a Stevenston player, and a foul was allowed. West sent the ball through.

Result of the match: - Irvine, 3; Stevenston Thistle, 2.
