HEROIC WORKMEN AT NOBEL’S EXPLOSIVES FACTORY

A public inquiry under the Fatal Accident Inquiry Act was held in Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Sheriff Mackenzie and a jury – with reference to the death of Richard Morgan, electrician, who resided at Ardoch Crescent, Stevenston, and who died on the 13th instant as a result of an accident at Nobel’s Explosives Factory, Stevenston, two days previously.

It appeared from the evidence that Morgan had been repairing an electric wire connection on the top floor or platform of the oleum house, a four-storey building, when an escape of fumes occurred due to an overflow of acid on the ground floor.

A foreman fitter, Kenneth McNab, residing at New Street, Stevenston, ascended an outside stair, crawled into the room on the top flat on his hands and knees, and dragged Morgan out to the landing, after which he was assisted by two other men, Thomas Brown and Daniel Cameron.

Morgan was unconscious and later succumbed to his injuries.

At the close of the evidence yesterday, Mr Thomas Brown, H.M. Factory Inspector, referred to the heroic conduct of the workmen in their efforts to save Morgan, and suggested that the jury should add to their verdict an appreciation of their courage and unselfish disregard for their own safety.

Mr J. Pollock Stevenson, procurator-fiscal, and the agents in the case associated themselves with Mr Brown’s suggestion, and the Sheriff said he thought it would be graceful and proper to acknowledge that these men were worthy of praise for their conduct in attempting to rescue their unfortunate fellow workman.

The jury added to their formal verdict that in their opinion the heroism of the witnesses, especially Kenneth McNab, who at the risk of life or serious personal injury rescued Morgan from a building filled with the dense and suffocating fumes of sulphuric acid, and was worthy of special recognition and commendation.
