FEVER OUTBREAK AT SALTCOATS AND STEVENSTON
The number of enteric fever cases has now reached 97 in Saltcoats. Almost all the patients, it has been ascertained, took their milk from a farm in the county area. The milk supply was stopped some time ago, and it is believed that the epidemic is abating.
All possible precautions are being taken by the Local Authority to prevent the disease from spreading.
In Stevenston, 23 cases have been notified, and these are being treated at Kilwinning Hospital.
Dr. Dittmar, medical inspector of the Local Government Board, has arrived, and is investigating the circumstances of the outbreak.

4 NOVEMBER 1896
FIRE IN A DRAPER’S SHOP
Early yesterday morning fire was discovered to have broken out in a shop in Alexander Place, Stevenston, occupied by Mr W. C. Poe, draper.
The discovery was made by some neighbours, who went for the police and gave the alarm before the fire had time to spread.
Water was carried in buckets from the burn close at hand and thrown on the flames, extinguishing them.
There is a fireplace behind the counter, and the fire, it is supposed had originated near that.
Considerable damage was done to the stock and fittings by fire and water, and the large plate glass windows were cracked.
The damage is covered by insurance.

5 NOVEMBER 1906
COURT OF SESSION – A PITIFUL STORY
Lord Salvesen heard proof in an action of divorce by Mary Jane Gunn or McNaught, 240 Cumberland Street, Glasgow, against Ebenezer McNaught, Carment Drive, Stevenston.
The pursuer, (26), replying to Mr Bartholomew, Counsel for the Pursuer, said she was married to the defender on November 11, 1898. Two children which had been born were both dead.
On a Saturday in the beginning of March, 1899, just after a baby was born, the defender told her that he was not to get his wages until Monday. He then went off, and she did not see him for three months.
On asking for support for the child she was told that if she would take him back, he would give her money. She lived with him until the end of April, 1900, when they had to break up the house through the defender not working.
The defender took her to a refuge for one night, and they walked the streets another night, then he took her to a women’s model and he went himself to a “gentleman’s model.”
Owing to her condition she tried to get into the maternity hospital, but was told to go to the poorhouse. At the poorhouse she was told she would have to get her husband. She went to the work where he said he was working, but she found he did not work there. She was forced to go to the police office, where the child was born.
She worked in a laundry until the baby died, and since then she had been in service. In consequence of what she had learned about the defender she had raised this action.
The defender had never given her anything for seven years, and she had to support her baby and to bury it when it died.
The defender had been employed in Dick’s gutta-percha works in Glasgow as a labourer.
Decree of divorce was granted.
[James Dick’s was a factory in Glasgow which made rubberised soles for shoes from gutta-percha – “gutties”.]
