GLASGOW HERALD
1 JUNE 1916
NOBEL’S WORKERS’ WAGES
A meeting of the workers in Messrs Nobel’s factory, Ardeer, was held in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, on Tuesday evening, when Mr Andrew Lennox presided over a crowded gathering.
Mr James Houghton, general secretary of the Scottish Union, who addressed the meeting, said they had met to discuss the demand for an increase in wages.
Since the war commenced the workers in Nobel’s factory had received by bonuses and advances in wages an increase of 7s 3d per week. The increase in the cost of living had been greater than the increase in their wages.
Under their agreement with the company they could not request an increase in wages till October, but they could apply for an additional bonus, and that was what he suggested should be done.
The meeting decided to request an additional bonus of 1d per hour on the actual hours worked.
