THE NEW YEAR - STEVENSTON

On Hogmanay there were musical services in the churches. The distribution of coal to the poor, subscribed for by the public was carried through by the Parish Council. Yesterday entertainments were given in the Ardeer Halls. At Ardeer course there were many golfers. The public works and collieries were closed until Thursday.

STEVENSTON PROPERTY SALES

During the past year there has been an extraordinary demand for house property.

Twenty sales of property have taken place, realising a gross sum of £2500 - £400 or £500 more than the same properties would have produced if they had been sold a year previously.

Of the total purchases of property, 17 have been by working men, mostly miners, amounting in the gross to £1800. In addition to the sum paid for properties by miners, at least £300 has been expended by them in rebuilding and repairs.

Overcrowding – The census returns and the valuation roll show that a population of 2177 is housed by property having a gross rental of only £2351, an average of little more than £1 per head of the population per annum.

The position of Stevenston village with regard to house accommodation is still more apparent when compared to the portion of Saltcoats in Stevenston parish.

For a population of 1,624 the gross rental of the house property in this part of Saltcoats is £2470 – this is to say, a population in Stevenston village of 553 more than in this part of Saltcoats, is provided with house accommodation at an annual rental of £129 less; or in another light, if the inhabitants of this village were to provide themselves with house room on even the moderate average of Saltcoats, more than 550 of the people would be without house shelter of any kind.

WIFE ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Mr Henderson, Hon. Sheriff-Substitute, John Dempsy, miner, Auchenharvie Cottages, Stevenston, was charged with having, on the 31st ultimo and 1st instant, assaulted his wife by striking her three blows on the face, knocking her to the floor, and compressing her throat, and also committing a breach of the peace.

He pleaded guilty and was fined in £2 or 30 days’ imprisonment.

ELECTION MEETING – NORTH AYRSHIRE

The Hon. Thomas Cochrane, Unionist candidate for North Ayrshire, addressed a large meeting at Stevenston last night.

A large number of questions were answered, and a vote of confidence passed at the close.

IRVINE TOWN COUNCIL AND ARDEER EXPLOSIVE STORE

At a meeting of Irvine Town Council last night, the clerk read a letter from the Secretary of State in reply to a recent communication from the Town Council unanimously protesting against the granting of an amending licence to Messrs Nobel Explosive Company Limited.

The reply to the Council’s protest, which the clerk read, stated that after careful consideration of the facts of the case the Secretary of State had decided to grant the amending licence for which Messrs Nobel had applied.

Provost Borland said that he did not think that the Council could do anything further in the matter, and no further comment was made on it.

POLICE WARNING ON PLATINUM THEFT

A warning to metal brokers and refiners on both sides of the Border to be on the look-out for a quantity of platinum gauze stolen from the Imperial Chemical Industries factory at Ardeer, Ayrshire, has been issued by the police.

The platinum, which is worthy about £5000 and was used in the manufacture of nitric acid, was stolen over the New Year holiday period.

FATAL RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT

On Monday a lad named Hugh McLaughlan, 13 years of age, residing with his grandmother in Ardeer Square, and employed at the ironworks as a labourer, was caught between the buffer of an engine and waggon, and received such injuries that he died from the effects yesterday morning.

At Kerelaw, Ayrshire, on the 9th instant, by the Rev. Dr. Muir, of St. Stephen’s, Edinburgh, Francis Edward James, Esquire, second son of John Kingston James, of Dublin, Baronet, to Helen Donald, daughter of the late John Fullarton, Esquire, and niece of Gavin Fullarton, of Kerelaw, Esquire.

COURT OF SESSION – MRS MAXWELL v. YOUNG

Evidence was led before Lord McLaren and a jury in an action by Mrs Mary Gilfillan or Maxwell, 4 Houston Square, Johnstone, against Alexander Young, butcher, 23 New Street, Stevenston.

The pursuer asked for £500 damages in respect of injuries received by the pursuer on 29th May last by falling down a stair leading to premises owned by the defender at 23 New Street, Stevenston.

The pursuer averred that the railing of the stair was in an unsafe condition. The defender denied fault, and contended that the handrail was sufficient for all ordinary purposes.

The case was continued until tomorrow.
