Yesterday afternoon the body of a man about 20 years of age was found on the beach at Ardeer. It is supposed that he had been bathing, and had been seized with cramp, as his clothes were found a short distance off.

WAGES AT ARDEER– INQUIRY BY ADMIRALTY

In consequence of the recent labour dispute at the Ardeer Factory of Messrs Nobel’s Explosives Company, two officials of the Admiralty – Mr G. B. Cobb and Mr J. A. Stockwell – are at present conducting an inquiry in St. Enoch Station Hotel, Glasgow, regarding the operation of the fair wages clause at the company’s works in the district.

The inquiry has been undertaken in response to an application by the men’s organisation, the Scottish Union of Dock Labourers.

It may be recalled that in a letter dated June 20, Sir George Askwith stated in reply to the secretary of the union that the Admiralty Commissioners had received a report of the Board of Trade on the wages of certain classes of labour in the Ardeer district, but that in their opinion it did not go far enough to enable them to decide whether the fair wages clause had been fulfilled or not. It would be necessary, they considered, to make further investigation, and they promised to do so whenever work was resumed.

The inquiry which is being held in private, was begun on Saturday and was continued yesterday afternoon.

Evidence has now been given on behalf of the men by Mr Gilbert Lewis, president of the Scottish Union of Dock Labourers.
