ARDEER EXPLOSION – ARDROSSAN ESCAPES LIGHTLY

Owing to the direction of the wind the explosion at Ardeer Factory was heard but indistinctly at Ardrossan, and by comparatively few people.

Those who heard the report assumed that the warships were firing in the firth, but some people observed the vast column of smoke spreading over Stevenston, and the true cause of the noise was steadily circulated in the town.

One man who had a clear view of the explosion from the top of the Castlehill says he felt no shock, but the appearance of the flame and smoke indicated that an explosion of considerable magnitude had taken place.

SHIPPING CASUALTY

Fleetwood, March 8 – The BLOOMER, from Ardrossan for Glasson Dock, which was stranded in the Lune, 19th ultimo, has now completely sanded over; about 40 tons of cargo (pig iron), with her stores, rigging, etc., have been saved.

MAN DROWNED AT ARDROSSAN HARBOUR

On Saturday night a man was seen to fall into the Eglinton Dock, Ardrossan. He was drowned before assistance could reach him.

Yesterday morning the body was identified as that of Charles Robb, (29), a native of Newtonards, County Down, who had lately worked as a railway surfaceman at Kilwinning, where he resided at the Townhead.

PUBLIC AUCTION

To be sold, by public auction, to the highest bidder, on Friday the 3rd of April next, 1812, at two o’clock in the afternoon.

All that good shew, or vessel, called LONSDALE, with all her materials, as she now lies on shore at Ardrossan, near Saltcoats, on the Clyde – burthen per register 185 tons.

The purchaser to pay a deposit of £10, and the remainder of the purchase money at three months, giving satisfactory security before they depart the sale.

Any person wishing to treat by private contract, may apply to Mr W. Bowes, ship-builder at Whitehaven, or to Mr Robert Simpson, the master and part owner, at Ardrossan, who will shew the vessel and materials there; an inventory of which, with a particular description thereof may also be seen at Mr Bowes’s in Whitehaven aforesaid.

SHIPPING CASUALTIES

Castletown, Ireland, March 7 – The SUSAN M. DUDMAN, from Ardrossan for Providence, Rhode Island, has put back here, with bowports started.

Tralee, March 9 – The RICHARD THOMSON, O’Neill, from Ardrossan for Galway, his roadstead on 8th March, with loss of bulwarks, sails, and boats, having encountered a gale from S.E.

MINERS’ STRIKE

As a result of the miners’ strike the dock labourers at Ardrossan have very little to do this week. The last vessel to arrive with iron ore was the (illegible). Her cargo has now been discharged, and the vessel is meanwhile laid up, as is also the (illegible), belonging to Messrs Miller & Company, Glasgow.

Limestone, however, is still coming in, and some of the men are employed with those cargoes.

At the Town Council Meeting Councillor Fawcett, convener of the Gas Committee, reported that there was at the gas-works as supply of coal to last four or five weeks.

The Spring meeting of this Club took place in the Barony of Ardrossan on Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th instant, when Lord Eglinton’s MAJOR won the Cup; and Captain Morris’s MISCHIEF the Sweepstakes.
