NEW AYR STEAMER

The communication with Ayrshire has received a considerable improvement in the new steamer BENLEDI, of 90 horse power, of very superior dimensions and speed. Her cabins are of the most elegant and simple design, and as spacious as the largest sea-going boats.

Her regular and quick passages must prove an additional inducement to visit the improving bathing places of Largs, Millport, and Ardrossan, where the new quays afford unprecedented facilities for landing; and at Ardrossan the railways are a ready means for conveying goods and passengers to Kilmarnock, &c.

SCARCITY OF HOUSES AT ARDROSSAN

At the monthly meeting of Ardrossan Town Council – Provost Chrystie presiding – the report of the medical officer for 1914 was submitted.

During the past year there had been no empty houses in the burgh, and the inmates had increased, while in some cases there were two families occupying one house.

The housing accommodation for the working classes was not sufficient, but so far as had been ascertained there was no actual over-crowding.

In some instances, employers had been unable to get workmen in consequence of the lack of houses.

Private enterprise was at present doing nothing to meet the housing requirements of the working classes.

The death rate for the year had been 11.3 per 1000, as against 14 for 1913, and was the lowest for the last five years.

The infantile mortality rate had been 106 per 1000 births, as against 126 per 1000 births for the preceding year.
