17 SEPTEMBER 1872
A SAVAGE WIFE BEATER
At the Police Court yesterday, before Provost Barr and Bailie Hogarth, Robert Craig, fireman, residing in Glasgow Street, whose respectable appearance betokened better conduct, pleaded guilty to committing serious assault on Mary McGhee or Craig, his wife, on the previous Saturday night.
It appeared from the evidence of Dr Wallace that the poor woman was in a sad condition, her face having been disfigured, while various parts of her body revealed some dangerous wounds, the result of different blows with clenched fists and kicks from the feet.
According to the evidence of the medical man the woman was not quite out of danger; and in the circumstances the Magistrates remitted the prisoner to the Sheriff. He was therefore conveyed to Kilmarnock yesterday afternoon.
The Provost remarked it was a pity the lash could not be applied in this case.

GLASGOW HERALD
18 SEPTEMBER 1912
PROPOSED ADDITIONS TO ARDROSSAN ACADEMY
At a meeting of Ardrossan School Board yesterday – Rev. J. Kirkland Cameron presiding – there was submitted a letter from the Education Department calling upon the Board to provide, without further delay, adequate gymnasium accommodation at the Academy, and also rooms for the practical teaching of housewifery.
The chairman said it was but a few years since the Board had been required to make certain additions to the academy, and they had then built six additional rooms, although the demand of the Department was for four.
At that time, they were assured that no further demands would be made for a considerable time, and now they had not only the present demand, but they were faced with the necessity of adding to the accommodation at Saltcoats Public School.
In view of these facts, and seeing that only five members of the Board were present, it was agreed to delay further consideration of the gymnasium in question till after the new Year.

POLICE CHASE ENDS IN FATAL CRASH
A young man died and his two companions were seriously injured early today when the van in which they were being pursued by a police car failed to negotiate the Cross at Irvine, Ayrshire, and crashed into the front of a shop.
The vehicle in which the three were trapped, caught fire. Police put out the blaze with extinguishers. Then firemen extricated the occupants.
A doctor found one of the men was already dead. His companions were given a police car escort as an ambulance took them to hospital in Kilmarnock. Both had serious injuries.
[Later newspaper reports indicate that William Nicol Slaven, 27 Winton Street, Ardrossan, died in this accident, and that John Cameron Robertson, (20), also 27 Winton Street, lost his left leg. The third person was someone the former two had stopped and given a lift to from Stevenston.]
