Almeria, April 5 – The HANOVERIAN, from Ardrossan for Marseille, with coals, is supposed to have foundered at sea off Majorca; the crew have arrived safe here.

The shipments of pig iron from Ardrossan Harbour for the week ending Thursday, 7 April, were: -

ARRAN SAILING ABANDONED

With the exception of the great storm of mid-December last, yesterday’s gale was the worst which has been experienced at Ardrossan for some years.

At 10 a.m. the wind was sufficiently strong to prevent the Arran steamer from sailing at her usual time, and as the gale grew worse as the forenoon advanced it was decided to abandon the trip altogether.

A number of people who intended to visit the island spent the day at Ardrossan.

A good deal of damage of a minor character was done to property by the force of the wind. The barricading at Celtic football field was levelled for the second time this season.

ARDROSSAN HARBOUR

The harbour at Ardrossan is full of shipping at present. Six large steamers are laid up in the Eglinton Dock on account of the coal strike. Two of the Head Line steamers have arrived for bunkers, and the CLAN LAMONT is loading sleepers for Africa. A cargo of iron ore from Malaga is being discharged as are several limestone cargoes.

ARDROSSAN BATHS AND SEA-BATHING QUARTERS

These baths, made of white marble, consisting of four hot and four cold, besides shower, shock, and vapour baths, were lately fitted up in excellent order, and from the experience already had of them by the public, have given universal satisfaction. They have every necessary accommodation, and a separate dressing-room is attached to each bath. The water is always procured of the purest quality, as it does not require, from the peculiar situation of the baths, to be conducted, as is usually the case, over a sand-bank or muddy shore, by means of a tunnel.

All the baths can be regulated to any temperature requisite, and they are situated on the side of the sea, at a convenient distance from the common thoroughfare.

They will be furnished to the public as formerly on moderate terms.

ALSO, TO LET IN THE SAME RANGE OF BUILDINGS

A common house, completely furnished, which, will accommodate a large and genteel family, consisting of a kitchen, dining room, drawing room, and parlour, with seven bed rooms, two water closets, wine cellars, butler’s pantry, servant’s hall, and other accommodation for servants.

Ardrossan, which is about a mile north-west of the town of Saltcoats, seems in a very peculiar manner to possess all the necessary qualities of a watering place; for to pure air, extensive views, and romantic rocks, it is distinguished for the superior saline qualities of its waters, being wholly unadulterated by any fresh stream.

There is daily every facility of intercourse with Glasgow and Paisley, etc., by means of coaches and steam boats, and direct communication daily with Greenock, Ayr, and the Island of Arran, by means of steam boats.

SHIPPING NEWS

Arrived at Ayr on Tuesday morning from Ichaboe, the brig MOUNTAIN MAID, of Aberdeen, Allan, with a cargo of guano. She had a quick passage of 54 days, inclusive of her calling at Cork. She left ELIZA of Ayr, and the WARRIOR of Ardrossan, neither of which were expected to obtain full cargoes, as the guano was all but exhausted.

ARDROSSAN TOWN COUNCIL MEETING

At a meeting of Ardrossan Town Council last night Lord Montgomerie was appointed a representative of the Military Manoeuvres Commission in connection with the military operations which are to take place in Ayrshire during the coming summer.

Ardrossan Parish Council have passed a resolution in favour of Mr Dundas White’s Land Values (Scotland) Bill, 1912, and have forwarded a copy of the resolution to the Secretary for Scotland, the Lord Advocate, and Captain Campbell, M.P., for North Ayrshire.

SCOTSMAN CHARGED WITH MURDER OF WIFE

Arrested after leaving hospital yesterday, James Fergus McMurray, (46), described as a bank clerk, Grosvenor Road, Muswell Hill, London, was later charged with murdering his wife, Mary Brown McMurray, by shooting her with a revolver between April 4 and 5, and further with attempting to commit suicide by coal gas poisoning.

Mrs McMurray was a native of Dalkeith. Her husband, James Fergus McMurray hails from Ardrossan.

He was formerly agent of the National Bank of Scotland at Montrose, and went to London about eight years ago to join the staff of a foreign banking corporation.

The Court proceedings yesterday were brief and McMurray was remanded until Thursday, when he will be brought up at Tottenham.
