STRIKE OF ARDROSSAN HARBOUR WORKMEN
The men in the employ of Ardrossan Harbour Company struck work yesterday owing to the places of union workmen being filled by non-unionists.
19 MARCH 1890
STRIKE OF ARDROSSAN HARBOUR WORKERS
The masters state that the dispute arose through the refusal of a union man to work with a non-union man, and his demand for the re-instatement of a fellow unionist to the same job as himself.
The workmen state that the union man was refused time-and-half for overtime, and they consider also that he was boycotted by the management.
The Ardrossan branch of the Knights of Labour say they only asked for the transference of the non-union man to other work, and point out that the strike is not for an increase in wages.
The Harbour Company’s manager has given notice to some of the strike men that he will hold them responsible for demurrage claims. The men, in reply, say they have no agreement, and consider they can leave the boats at their own option.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.
