GLASGOW HERALD
31 OCTOBER 1912
DOCKERS’ STRIKE AT ARDROSSAN
The dockers at Ardrossan Harbour were called out on strike at one o’clock yesterday by the union officials. As already reported, the coal trimmers ceased work on Tuesday.
Yesterday the loading of the steamer NORRISTON was undertaken by a number of volunteers, the harbourmaster himself taking a share of the work.
Yesterday morning Mr Houghton, of the Dockers’ Union, asked the harbourmaster to stop loading the vessel. The harbourmaster refused, and Mr Houghton promptly retaliated by calling upon all dockers at the harbour to come out on strike.
Two cargoes of iron ore and one of limestone await discharge, and the Harbour Company are making arrangements to have the work carried on, about 30 men having already been brought in from Glasgow.
Interviewed yesterday evening, Captain Orr, the harbourmaster, said he had found that the dockers were divided amongst themselves, many of them having expressed their dissatisfaction with the action of the union officials.
Meanwhile the strikers are being kept off the harbour precincts by the police, but there has been no disturbance.

GLASGOW HERALD
1 NOVEMBER 1912
THE STRIKE AT ARDROSSAN HARBOUR
The strike at Ardrossan Harbour continues. In addition to the Harbour Company’s men, the dockers employed by G. & J. Burns stopped work yesterday morning, and an attempt was made, unsuccessfully, to induce the employees of Messrs William Christie & Company to join the strikers.
About 50 men were brought from Glasgow by the Harbour Company yesterday, but Mr Houghton, of the Dockers’ Union, who was early on the scene, persuaded the majority of them to return to the city. Something like 30 men are working, and are housed by the Harbour Company at the bothy erected some years ago to meet such a contingency.
There are now four cargoes of ore awaiting discharge, and one large steamer is being slowly loaded with coal. Part of one of the ore cargoes was yesterday successfully discharged by means of a mechanical grubber.
A special force of policemen has been drafted to the harbour to keep the strikers from interfering with the men who are working. So far, the strikers have behaved in the most exemplary manner.
