THE SCOTTISH ECCLESIOLOGICAL SOCIETY VISIT ARDROSSAN

The member of the Scottish Ecclesiological Society (Glasgow District) paid a visit to Ardrossan on Saturday for the purpose of inspecting the excavations recently made at the Castlehill.

The party was met by the Rev. J. Kirkland Cameron, New Ardrossan Parish Church, and Mr J. C. Duncan, burgh surveyor, who explained the operations which had been carried out by the Town Council and exhibited the various objects of antiquarian interest. The party also visited the Burgh Chambers, where the twelfth century stone coffin, found on the hill, had been housed.

The visitors were entertained to tea in the New Parish Church Hall by Provost Chrystie.

COMPLAINT AGAINST B.B. BOYS REFUTED

A statement has been issued by the headquarters of the Boys’ Brigade regarding allegations made by Anstruther District Education Sub-Committee about the conduct of the 1st Ardrossan B.B. Company at Kirkton of Largo School in the summer.

It was alleged that members of the company caused damage at the school and left the floors in a dirty condition.

Apart from the damage to the drinking fountain, which was reported by the captain of the company to Mrs Gatherum, the school caretaker (and which damage was at that time purely mechanical), and the dirty floor, which through circumstances could not be cleaned, for which the sum of £1 was paid to Mrs Gatherum to have scrubbed, no further liability was accepted by the company,” the statement from the B.B. headquarters stated.

“Despite a request by the Brigade Headquarters for substantiating evidence relating to the various charges against the company, such evidence has not been forthcoming, and it is, therefore, to be assumed that the charges made against the company are without foundation.

“In view of this, Brigade Headquarters regard with the deepest concern the derogatory remarks made by Mr Gatherum, a member of the Anstruther District Education Sub-Committee, and have demanded a withdrawal of these statements.

It was also stated that, under the terms of the let of the school, the complaint should have been first made to the Ardrossan B.B. Company, but that the first intimation was the publication in the newspapers.

“In addition,” the statement continued, “the statement made to the press and published on October 14 was misleading in that the Education Sub-Committee called for payment of the damage done where liability was admitted. No liability was in fact admitted.”

SALTCOATS LICENSING COURT

For houses previously licensed, but the certificates had lapsed, licenses were granted to John Dunkeld, Saracen’s Head Hotel, Saltcoats; James W. Keenan, Caledonia Road, Saltcoats, (British wines only); and Andrew Leckie, Ardrossan, public-house.

Robert McMillan, Bradshaw Street, Saltcoats, was granted a public-house license for new premises, instead of for an adjoining house now licensed.

Transfers were granted to R. Dunlop, Green Street, Saltcoats; John Murray, Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, public-house; and James Watson, Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, grocers.

Mr Galloway referred to the great number of drunk men who almost nightly created an uproar on their way from Ardrossan to Saltcoats. He thought the police should ascertain what public-houses in Ardrossan supplied these men. The inspector was asked to furnish a report on the matter.
