A GALLANT SEAMAN
The gallant conduct of a seaman of the Royal Naval Reserve was specially commended by Sheriff Robertson and a jury at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, when a public inquiry was held in regard to the death of William McMillan, a watchman, who resided at 3 Paisley Street, Ardrossan, and who was drowned in Ardrossan Harbour on Thursday, October 10, about six o’clock.
McMillan was proceeding in a rowing boat to start work on a steamer, when the boat capsized and he was thrown into the sea.
The trawler ASHLYN was coming in from the sea at the time and Seaman Thomas Foy, hearing a shout that there was a man in the water, immediately jumped overboard and swam a distance of nearly 100 yards to the assistance of McMillan.
It was a very stormy night – an “awful night,” to quote the words of the witnesses – and the sea was running high.
Foy got hold of McMillan and held him up till they were picked up in a boat from the ASHLYN.
Artificial respiration was applied to McMillan, but unfortunately without restoring animation.
The jury agreed to express their appreciation of the gallantry of Seaman Foy, and to recommend that his conduct be brought before the Royal Humane Society and the Carnegie Trustees for consideration by them.
