GLASGOW HERALD
15 JUNE 1915
ARDROSSAN DOCKERS’ STRIKE
Mr Joseph Houghton, general secretary of the Scottish Union of Dock Labourers, yesterday addressed a large meeting of the men employed at Ardrossan Harbour on the subject of the recent stoppages. He had received a letter from the Ardrossan Harbour Company complaining of the numerous stoppages which had taken place at the harbour, and of the demands being made by the men.
It was very unfortunate that such a letter should have to be written at a time like the present.
If the Government by the action of the dockers was forced to adopt compulsion then the agreements would be short-lived, and all the work of their organisations for years would be lost.
On the question being put to the meeting it was agreed, with one dissenter, that in cases of dispute the men would continue to work while the case was being debated between Mr George Lewis, the local secretary, and the Harbour Company, and that in the event of no settlement being arrived at that the matter should be referred to Judge McKellar and Mr George Reynolds, J.P., Ardrossan, who would act as arbiters, and whose decision would be final.

The Committee on Production have issued their award in connection with an application by the dock labourers at Ayr, Troon, Ardrossan, and Irvine for an increase of overtime rates.
The decision of the Committee is that from the beginning of the first full pay following the date of the award the overtime rate for the discharge of ore and limestone will be 7¼d per hour.
It is stated that a separate award will be issued in connection with the second portion of the claim put forward by the dock labourers that the Committee’s recent general award of an increase of wages to dock labourers throughout Great Britain should be made applicable to the four Ayrshire ports in question.

GLASGOW HERALD
26 JUNE 1911
HOLIDAY RESORT – ARDROSSAN
The past week has been one of broken weather, with frequent high winds and heavy showers of rain. On Saturday there were many trippers in the town. About 2000 children were to have a picnic on the South Beach Green, but owing to the rain they were accommodated in the various halls at the harbour. The Arran and Belfast passenger traffic continues to be satisfactory, but the seaman’s strike on Saturday prevented the Portrush boat sailing. Sunday was showery, with a strong northerly wind, and the sea was rough.
