KILLER CLEARED OF ASSAULT CHARGE

Convicted killer Ian Breckenridge [formerly 5 Clyde Terrace, Ardrossan] was yesterday cleared of a charge of attacking the woman he married while serving a life sentence.

He was found not guilty of kicking his wife in her home at Hillside Road, Neilston, in January and a charge of assaulting a 16-year-old girl with intent to rape.

Breckenridge, (40), said his wife Christine, (39), had “framed him.”

There was no immediate freedom for Breckenridge, who served 12 years of a life sentence for murdering his lover, 22-year-old Helen Carson in 1968.

Because he was on licence from the life sentence, he was returned to prison to await an investigation by the Parole Board on whether there had been any breach of parole.

DISPUTE AT ARDROSSAN HARBOUR

A stoppage of work took place at Ardrossan Harbour on Saturday through trouble arising in connection with the arranging of the “turns” of the men.

The foreman had decided that the steamer TAY, which was loading 150 tons of coal, was not a “turn”, and wanted to give the same men the work in the following ship, which was taking 2000 tons.

The other men in the dock objected, and stopped work.

Yesterday forenoon Mr Thomas Mann, in company with Mr G. Lewis, the local secretary of the Dockers’ Union interviewed the Harbour Company.

Mr Mann afterwards addressed a meeting of workers in the Market Square. He said that owing to the very remarkable situation of the war, whether they liked it or not, they were agreed that it must be continued with the utmost vigour. They subscribed to the reasonable policy that everything should be done to manufacture and transport munitions in the quickest possible time. He was amongst those who whilst they hated war recognised that there was no chance of getting out of this war unless they fought it through in the most effective and successful fashion.

The present was not the time to raise a variety of questions which might justifiably be raised under normal conditions. There was a certain lack of discipline characterising the men in the port of Ardrossan. He was compelled to take the view that there was not sufficient reason or justification for the stoppage on Saturday.

If the men were not willing to find a way out of the difficulty and avoid stoppages then the Government would. He knew that the Admiralty were contemplating certain departures with regard to the administration of work at ports. He was one who wanted a minimum amount of Government interference and rigidity in their work, but unless the men could settle these matters for themselves, they would be regimented, as had happened in Liverpool.

He proposed that from now onward only cargoes of 200 tons and upwards should be regarded as a “turn”. If they agreed to that there would be no further trouble in that connection.

The meeting agreed to the suggestion, and the men resumed work.
