GLASGOW HERALD
23 JUNE 1874
A HARBOUR OF REFUGE
Those who have a thirst for stimulants on Sunday are not over particular as to the source of supply, and it has been openly stated on more than one occasion that the steamers in the harbour at Ardrossan supplied an excellent harbour of refuge for thirsty souls.
On Sunday last it seemed that two intoxicated men had got a supply in this way, and the steward of the steamer NEWRY, THOMAS BOYLE, was accordingly brought before Provost Barr and Mr D. J. Mack, at a special Justice of Peace Court yesterday charged with a contravention of the law.
He was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of £2 10s, with expenses.

GLASGOW HERALD
25 JUNE 1873
CURIOUS PLACE FOR A NEST
A correspondent writes: -
During a recent visit to Ardrossan Cemetery, the sexton pointed out a partridge’s nest located among some long grass at the base of a tombstone. The nest contains 15 eggs, and the hen rarely leaves them. Indeed, so tenaciously does the bird cling to the nest that the recent cutting of the grass within a few inches of the spot failed to disturb her, and the presence of a funeral company in the immediate vicinity lately also failed to annoy her.
This is said to be the third season in which a similar phenomenon has been witnessed in the cemetery.

GLASGOW HERALD

THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY
Several excursions left Ardrossan yesterday, the day being observed by the merchants and others here and in Saltcoats and Stevenston as the annual holiday.
The steamer LANCELOT ran a trip to Garelochhead, and secured quite a crowd of passengers, while the ROTHESAY CASTLE and VALE OF CLYDE were also well patronised.
The weather fortunately was fine.

GLASGOW HERALD
25 JUNE 1878
ARDROSSAN DISCOVERY OF HUMAN REMAINS
The workmen engaged at excavations in connection with the extension at the railway station have just discovered the remains of a human body.
The skull was perfect when found, but unfortunately smashed by a falling stone. The teeth of the upper jaws were almost perfect. The body had apparently been buried three or four feet underground, and had been covered by stones.
A good deal of speculation has been considered as to how the remains came to be buried in the place where they were found.
Another discovery of a similar kind was made yesterday afternoon.

25 JUNE 1878
ACCIDENT TO THE ARRAN STEAMER
Yesterday morning as the new steamer BRODICK CASTLE was crossing from Brodick to Ardrossan, and nearing the Ayrshire coast, one of the floats of the starboard paddle became loose, and striking against the one next to it damaged it also.
Captain Buchanan at once had the engines stopped, and under his superintendence the damaged floats were in the somewhat difficult circumstances removed.
With the exception of a slight hurt to the head of one of the crew nothing more serious than a delay of about three-quarters of an hour occurred.
