Died on service, Private GEORGE PATON, Royal Scots Fusiliers, Service No. 200600 – Theatre of war, Palestine – enlisted at Ardrossan; son of Mrs Paton, 13 Alice Street, Paisley, and the late Mr George Paton.

SHIPMASTER DROWNED

Yesterday morning about seven o’clock the body of a man was found in the dock at Ardrossan Harbour.

Deceased has been identified as HENRY EDWARDS, master of a Liverpool schooner. He went ashore on Thursday night last, when he was seen about eleven.

Deceased was about 40 years of age, unmarried.

The Glasgow, Paisley, and Ardrossan Canal being now navigable from Port Eglinton, at Glasgow, to Johnstone, the passage boats will ply daily between these two places.

FATAL ACCIDENT

We regret to have to record a fatal accident which occurred at Ardrossan on Wednesday.

On that morning, about five o’clock, when dark and very stormy, while the steamer FIRE FLY was entering the harbour from Belfast, her bow got aground, and the stern rope having been got ashore, it was taken and attached to the capstan, and the vessel was thus brought nearer the quay.

Orders having been given on board to back the engine, not knowing the rope was taut, and it having been done, the men at the capstan being taken unawares, were thrown to the ground, and one into the sea. All were more or less injured, save two, but none seriously, except Mr John Tait, agent of the Company, who was standing near giving assistance, when, most unfortunately, one of the bars of the capstan struck him about the stomach.

After being conveyed home and all medical attention paid him, he lingered in great pain until 11 o’clock the same evening, when he expired.

He was deservedly much respected by his employers, the servants of the company, and the public in general. He has left a widow, but no family.

SHIPPING NEWS

New York, November 1 – The Barque PALMYRA, of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Lovett, which arrived here on the 26th ultimo, from Ardrossan, in 73 days, with pig iron and iron pipe, reports having had continual heavy gales during the month of September.

On the 4th September, in latitude 49, longitude 26, while hove-to in a gale, carried away maintopsail, was hove on her beamends, and shifted cargo; on the 19th September, during a gale from N.W., lost head, cutwater, stove forward house, and so strained the vessel as to cause her to leak about 12 inches per hour since.

ARDROSSAN INDEPENDENT CHURCH

The anniversary soiree in connection with this congregation was held in the Church on Monday evening – The Rev. Alexander Cross presiding.

The Chairman in his opening remarks, said that he had been connected with the Church as pastor for thirty years. They entered upon another year hopefully, and he hoped the course would be onward and upward.

Addresses were also delivered by Rev. Mr Brotchie, Greenock; Trenwith, Kilwinning; Bathgate, Kilmarnock; Ferguson, D.D., Glasgow; and Captain Smith.

The choir gave some excellent selections, and the Rev. Mr Trenwith sang several solos with much ability.
