FIRE

Damage to the extent of £1400 was caused at Knockrivoch Farm, near Saltcoats, by a fire which broke out on Saturday.

A large quantity of grain, threshing mill, bruiser, several cutters, and some modern agricultural machinery were destroyed.

Saved boy is satisfactory

James Johnston (12) Elderslie, Renfrewshire, who was pulled unconscious from the sea at Saltcoats, Ayrshire was said to be "satisfactory" in Kilmarnock Infirmary today.
Father of five Hugh Payne (41), Johnstone, Renfrewshire, was drowned when he tried to rescue the boy as hundreds of people on the beach watched. Another holidaymaker Mr John Brown (40), of Rutherglen, brought the boy ashore.

Hughie, Thanks for posting this article. I knew of this particular incident and for reasons of my own have been trying to trace it. Pin-pointing the date has led me to how the Glasgow Herald covered the story. This is an example of yet another death at the "whirlpool" or "plumb" located directly opposite Winton Street, Saltcoats.

FATHER OF FIVE DROWNED
WENT TO AID OF BOY

A father of five children was drowned last night when he went to rescue a boy who was in difficulties in the sea at Saltcoats, Ayrshire.

Mr. HUGH PAYNE, aged 41, of 22 Greenhead Avenue, Johnstone, Renfrewshire, ran into the sea opposite Winton Street, Saltcoats, when he saw JAMES JOHNSTONE, aged 12, 43 Renshaw Street, Elderslie, in trouble near a stretch of water which had a notice warning bathers of dangerous currents.

Mr. Payne then got into difficulties and a day-tripper, Mr. J. Brown, 3 Bereland Road, Rutherglen, went to the boy's rescue and pulled him unconscious on to the beach.

BROUGHT ASHORE

Other people managed to reach Mr. Payne, but he was found to be dead when brought ashore.

The boy was said to be seriously ill in Kilmarnock Infirmary last night.

Hi, i came accross this article and couldnt believe that people still remember, Mr Hugh Payne was my Grandfather. My mother was 5yrs old when this incident accuired the baby of the 5 children, our family still talk remember the courage of my grandfather and what he did, now in the book of heroes in the carneige trust in dunfermile, still makes me proud of him.

SALTCOATS LICENSING COURT

There were two applications for new premises.

John Murray applied for a public-house license for premises at the harbour. The house was formerly licensed. By a majority the license was refused.

Charles Miller applied for a public-house and grocer’s license for new premises at the foot of Raise Street. Applicant presently occupies premises with a public-house and grocer’s license in Countess Street, but as the building is to come down to make way for the railway alterations he is removing to new premises. Both licenses were granted by a majority.

Mr. Campbell, writer, appeared for both applicants.

Four applications for renewal of transferred certificates were granted, as was also an application by a new tenant – Mr. Nisbet, who holds a wine and beer license for premises in Princes Street, Ardrossan, applied for a license to sell spirits. Mr. Kirkhope, writer, appeared in support of the application. The Court refused to grant a license for spirits, but gave a license for wine and beer.

A similar application by Mr. P. Thomas, who has a restaurant in Vernon Street, Saltcoats, was dealt with in a similar way.

The following is a list of licensed houses in the district: -

Ardrossan:
Hotels, 2; public-houses, 12; grocers, 7; wine and beer, 1.

Saltcoats:
Hotels, 3; public-houses, 11; grocers, 10, wine and beer, 1.

Stevenston:
Hotels, 2; public-houses, 11; grocers, 2; wine and beer, 1.

THE SALTCOATS BATHING POND

At a special meeting of the Town Council last night two requisitions signed by over 300 ratepayers were presented protesting against the construction of a pond at the North Pans.

On the motion of Mr. Arnott, seconded by Mr. Blakely, the Council resolved to rescind their resolution.

Mr. Arnott then moved the suspension of standing orders, and this being agreed to, he moved that the Council construct a bathing pond, as shown on the plans prepared by the surveyor, and that the money required be taken from the McAlister Fund.

Mr. Blakely seconded the motion with regret. He had hoped the capital of the McAlister Fund would be kept intact, as it was the only Common Good the town had.

Mr. Thomson moved the previous question, but failed to find a seconder, and the motion was declared carried.
