MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS
This body met on Monday night – Provost Halkett in the chair.
The offer of Messrs S. Black & Company to erect new and repair old lamps, at a cost of £43 10s, was accepted.
In reply to a letter from Mr. Kirkhope, it was agreed to hold the Police Courts on the same day as the J.P. Courts – on the first Friday of each month.
A letter was read from the Board of Supervision intimating approval of the payments of the claims by the Parochial Boards of Stevenston and Ardrossan for expenses incurred before the adoption of the Police Act, and that the assessment under the Public Health Act must be assessed, levied, and recovered in the same manner as the Police assessment.
The account of expenses incurred in the adoption of the General Police Act were submitted, amounting to £87 9s 1d.

FOND OF PASTRY
A miner named WILLIAM REILLY, went into a baker’s shop in Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, along with another man who was buying pastry. Reilly was the worse of drink and commenced to pocket some of the eatables, and when the baker requested him to return the pastry he refused.
Reilly challenged the baker to fight, and made so great a disturbance that he was ejected.
At the Burgh Court yesterday Bailie Duncan fined him 7s 6d or seven days. He went to prison.

With the wind in their favour, the home team had the best of the play in the first half, putting on 5 goals to the opponents 1.
In the second half the game was more evenly contested, but in favour of the home team, who put on two more points, and the game ended –
Victoria, 7 goals; Beith, 1 goal.

Under this title an address was given in the Free Church Hall, Saltcoats, on Wednesday evening by Mr. William C. Maughan, of Glasgow.
The chair was occupied by Mr. J. B. Verel of Kerelaw House, and there was a large attendance.

OBTAINING BICYCLES BY FRAUD
At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, JAMES LONGMUIR, quarryman, Barkip, Dalry, failed to appear in answer to a charge of fraudulently obtaining four bicycles valued at £36 from Margaret Hunter or Jones, cycle agent, Countess Street, Saltcoats, between the 23rd June and 14th July, and his bail bond of £10 was declared forfeited.
Longmuir, it was alleged, represented to Mrs. Jones that he was manager of Green Quarry, Kilmaurs, and that three of the bicycles were for his master’s sons and the other one for himself.
It was afterwards discovered that he had appropriated them to his own purposes.
