GLASGOW HERALD
28 JULY 1910
HOLIDAY RESORT – SALTCOATS
Unsettled weather has prevailed for a few days. Tuesday was breezy with a low temperature, and on Wednesday morning there was a heavy downpour of rain. Towards noon the rain ceased, and with bright sunshine visitors could det out of doors for recreation. The concert by Mrs Hampson’s Pierrots in the Town Hall last night was a great success. There are a good many enquiries for houses in August, and there is every prospect of that month being a busy one.

GLASGOW HERALD
28 JULY 1910
THE PRIVILEGES OF ICE-CREAM DEALERS
At Saltcoats Police Court yesterday - before Bailies Christie and Millar - Francis Adolphus, Winton Buildings, Ardrossan, and Vittoria Guidi, Countess Street, Saltcoats, both ice-cream salesmen, pleaded not guilty to a charge of loitering and obstructing the thoroughfare at the esplanade and Melbourne Park while disposing of their goods on the dates during Glasgow Fair week.
Mr Joseph Kirkland, writer, appeared for the accused and pointed out that they had caused no more obstruction than that caused regularly by the minstrels.
The Fiscal, Mr T Smith, held that it was for the court to decide whether the use made of the roadway was unreasonable or unnecessary and amounted to an obstruction.
The accused were found guilty.
Adolphus was fined £2, or 20 days’ imprisonment, and Guidi, against whom there were two charges, £4 or 40 days’ imprisonment.
A case against a youth of 16 was withdrawn.

GLASGOW HERALD
29 JULY 1911
MARCHED FROM ELGIN TO SALTCOATS
This issue of the Glasgow Herald includes an extract of a brief memoir by Alexander Patterson who, in 1806, ran away from his uncle's smallholding in Elgin to enlist in the 92nd Highlanders.
He describes being marched from Elgin to Forres, and thence to Nairn and Inverness, eventually coming to Blair Atholl, and from there to Dunkeld, Crieff and Stirling. They then marched from Stirling to a seaport called Saltcoats.
At "the seaport called Saltcoats", he said, "the men embarked on a collier for Dublin where the 92nd were in barracks and where the grimy conditions of the recruits on their arrival, fresh from the coal dust in the collier's hold, gave rise to many a sally hard enough to swallow."

HOLIDAY RESORT – SALTCOATS
After the thunderstorm at the end of the week we have had fine weather. Large numbers of people left for home on Monday. A good many day-trippers were in town, so that the streets were busy. Houses are pretty well let for August, and there are still many enquiries for accommodation. Arrangements are being made for a swimming gala to clear off the debt on the swimming club pavilion.
