NORTH AYRSHIRE VOTERS ROLL

The new roll, just made up, shows a remarkable decrease in the number of persons entitled to vote in the election of a Member of Parliament in North Ayrshire.

Saltcoats:

1885-86, 922;
1886-87, 781;

Decrease, 141.

The decrease is due to an unusual indifference to political rights, to bad trade, which has increased the number of people who have failed to pay poor-rates, and to a decrease in the population.

BODY FOUND AT SALTCOATS

On Sunday, the body of a boy was found at the seamark on the south side of Saltcoats, with his right ear cut off, the wound being about 2 inches long and 1½ broad.

The body has been examined by medical gentlemen, who have given their opinion that the boy was murdered.

The body was taken to Ardrossan Church, and no person has yet appeared to claim it. He appears to be about eleven or 12.

GIRVAN BOY’S BODY FOUND AT SALTCOATS

A precognition was taken by the Justices in the neighbourhood of Saltcoats, by Sheriff Depute and Substitute, on the body of the boy mentioned in a former paper, said to have been found murdered at the east end of the town of Saltcoats; and from the investigation it clearly appears that he belonged to Girvan, and was drowned in the river in the late floods, on the afternoon of Tuesday the 26th ultimo, when attempting to catch a stick that was floating down the river.

The injury on the side of his head must have been received while in the water.

FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT

A Saltcoats woman was killed and five persons injured in a railway accident on the L.M.S. main line, near Glengarnock Station, on Saturday night, when a projection from a passing goods train struck one of the coaches and tore its way through the woodwork.

The dead woman was Mrs Hannah, 35 Springvale Street, Saltcoats.

The injured passengers were: -

Mr and Mrs Denby and Miss Denby, 10 Seton Street, Ardrossan;
Mrs Fisher, Ardrossan; and
Mrs Moffat, Saltcoats.

The train was brought to a standstill. Mrs Hannah was killed outright. Her head had been struck by the projection from the goods train. The injuries to the others were caused by pieces of debris and were not serious.

One of the other passengers in the compartment, Mr D. McAuslan, junior, Stevenston, gave an account of the accident. He said there was a loud crash like an explosion, and he stated that he thought there had been a collision. The window burst into splinters and the woodwork was smashed.

OBJECTOR’S “PRAYERS” FOR GOVERNMENT

Asked by Lord Elphinstone what he was prepared to do to serve his country in the present emergency William C. Sutherland, a student at the Glasgow Bible Training Institute and living at 8 Anderson Drive, Saltcoats, told the Scottish Conscientious Objectors’ Appellate Tribunal in Edinburgh yesterday that he would pray for the Government.

LORD ELPHINSTONE – Otherwise you are not prepared to lift a finger? – THAT IS SO.

LORD ELPHINSTONE – You are quite prepared for other people to fight on your behalf? – YES.

Sutherland, who was appealing against having to do agricultural work as a condition of being registered as a conscientious objector, was granted exemption on condition he continued his training to enter the ministry.
