GLASGOW HERALD
21 SEPTEMBER 1910
THE STREET ARTIST’S £1 NOTE
A singular case was tried at Saltcoats Police Court yesterday – before Bailie Miller – Elizabeth Walker or McLean and Mary Brown, both residing at Auchenharvie Row, being charged with circulating a false £1 note.
The evidence showed that some time ago a street artist drew a picture of a £1 note on a piece of butter paper and gave it to a friend. The note fell into the hands of Mrs McLean and Mary Brown, who attempted to change it at a public-house, but the barman refused to accept it.
Afterwards Brown purchased some cakes in a shop in Canal Street, and she changed the note.
The charge was found proven and McLean was fined 21s. or 15 days’ imprisonment. Brown, who can neither read nor write, may have thought the note was genuine, and was given the benefit of the doubt and admonished.

GLASGOW HERALD
21 SEPTEMBER 1974
TWO MEN HELD AFTER FLAT DEATH
A man whose body was found in a holiday flat at Saltcoats on Thursday, was named yesterday as Mr John MacDonald, aged 42, a librarian, of Farnborough, Hampshire.
Detective Chief Inspector Derek MacAllister, who had earlier indicated investigations were being treated as a murder inquiry, said yesterday, “Two men will appear in court in Kilmarnock tomorrow.”
Mr MacDonald, who was born in Glasgow, was owner of the flat at 1 McIsaac Road, Saltcoats, which he used often as a base for business trips.
His body was discovered by Mrs Daisy Campbell, a neighbour, when she entered the house to tidy up as she occasionally did following Mr MacDonald’s visits.
The dead man was identified by his brother and sister, who travelled from their home in Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire.
Last night his wife was being driven north.

HOLIDAY RESORT – SALTCOATS
The fine weather continues. The Burgh Band give a special concert in Melbourne Park on Saturday evening. One of the pieces on the programme is a military fantasia, which will be rendered with full spectacular and descriptive effects. On Sunday afternoon a sacred concert will be held at the bandstand. At the skating rink there are several holiday attractions. The bathing pond still has a large number of patrons. The lady members of the swimming club have resolved to approach the Town Council with a request for longer hours, or if that is not granted mixed bathing during stated periods daily.

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Hon. Sheriff-Substitute John Kerr, Matthew Crawford was charged with having on August 30 at Saltcoats slaughter-house, while acting as agent for Messrs William Dunlop & Company, hide and skin factors’, Ayr, received from a butcher in Saltcoats a cheque valued at £5 3s, which he cashed and appropriated to his own use. He pleaded guilty.
The Fiscal said that accused had eight previous convictions. Twice in 1908 he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and last year he was again sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.

Accused’s mother was in Winnipeg, and she had forwarded sufficient money to pay his passage out to Canada.
Accused was sent to prison for six months.
