DOUBLE CHILD KILLER SENT TO CARSTAIRS
Alan Albert Eastham, (32), a Preston man, a misfit who lived in a garden shed at 213 Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, yesterday admitted the killing in May of Saltcoats teenagers Robert and Margaret Monan.
Robert and Margaret lived with their mother Irene at 18 Mulgrew Avenue, Saltcoats, and three sisters, Alice, aged 12; Theresa, aged 16; and Janie, aged 17.
Mrs Monan and her husband Robert have lived apart for some years, but both shared the grief which swept Saltcoats at their children’s deaths.
After submitting a plea of culpable homicide, which was accepted by the Crown and endorsed by a formal verdict from the jury, Eastham was committed to the State Hospital at Carstairs without limit of time.

NORTH AYRSHIRE VALUATION APPEAL COURT
On Monday the North Ayrshire Valuation Appeal Court was held in the Town Hall, Ardrossan, when Colonel Sturrock presided.
Mr Kirkland appealed on behalf of the Saltcoats Pavilion Company Limited against the proposal to raise the valuation of the pavilion from £80 to £150, and pointed out that there was now another picture house in the town dividing the business. If £80 was a proper valuation when the pavilion had had a monopoly of the business, he did not see why such an increase should be made now, when, as everyone knows the pavilion was of less value than it had been two years ago.
The Court fixed the valuation at £130.

HEAVY RAIN IN SALTCOATS
Heavy showers fell in Saltcoats from Friday till Sunday night. The rainfall for 24 hours on Friday and Saturday was .93 of an inch. This equals over 20,000 gallons to the acre. Notwithstanding the heavy rain it is not supposed that much of the water would go to the reservoirs, the bulk of being absorbed by the parched land.

HOLIDAY RESORT – SALTCOATS
Visitors this week have been favoured with ideal weather – bright sunshine with a pleasant breeze. A great many people gather in the morning at the Northpans Pond for their daily swim, and they find the water in excellent condition, its temperature on Thursday being 59 degrees. Harvesting is now in full swing in the district, and some of the farmers have got a portion of their crops stacked. The mineral well continues to secure large measures of support, and the attendance at the skating rink at the evening sessions is keeping up well. The band concerts which continue till the end of the month attract large crowds to Melbourne Park.
