SALTCOATS – 1/1/1913 - 100 YEARS AGO TO THE DAY

At the Parish Church the Rev. D. D. Rees conducted a watch night service at which there was a large audience.

The weather on New Year’s Day was fine, and large numbers of golfers played over the course.

The Temperance Union held their annual festivals in the afternoon for children and in the evening for adults.

The Pavilion, in addition to the usual entertainments, had a matinee in the afternoon.

St. Mary’s League of the Cross Society held a concert and soiree.

Free breakfasts were dispensed at the Christian Institute, Canal Street and Quay Street Mansions.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the Pavilion mentioned here isn't the Beach Pavilion, which didn't open until 1927 or so; but one of the earliest cinemas in Saltcoats. It was in Glencairn Street, had started out as an ice rink, and in later life the building was used as Pringle's Garage. See http://www.threetowners.net/forum/viewt ... 786#p97786.

I have just finished reading "In The Shadow of the Dynamite" in which the author John Millar says that the "Pavilion" closed as a picture hall in March 1915. The Nobel explosive company took it over and turned it into lodgings for it's new male recruits brought in from Ireland. The Pavilion Lodge was home to 198 men. 138 cubicles on first floor, 60 cubicles, dinning hall, reading and recreation room, kitchen and toilets on the ground floor.
After the 1st war it was sold and opened in June 1919 as "Pringle's Motor Garage Ltd.

5th January.
On this day in 1991 the worst storms & flooding since 1926 hit Saltcoats.

I remember that day well Richard. My poor dad wasnt out of hospital long and if I say he had to run about in the shower to get wet, you can imagine how thin he was. I took him down the town to change his library books, put a line on at Ladbrokes, and into Charlie Wilders for a hauf and a beer. When we came out of the pub about 1.30 I had to cross the road (my car was parked at the side of the Lyric) and he lost his footing with the strength of the wind - just as well I had a hold of him by the arm or he would have been blown away! In fact it was like trying to control a 5' 8" kite. It took me all my time to get him into the car.

GLASGOW HERALD
10 JANUARY 1900

At a meeting of the Commissioners yesterday - Provost Guthrie presiding - a report from the Shores and Improvement Committee was submitted recommending that a concrete pavement be formed from Winton Street to Harmony Place with a bastion opposite Westfield for a bandstand.

[I wonder if this suggests that Melbourne Road was previously Harmony Place?]

Fascinating discovery, PT. It's not marked as Harmony Place on any of the maps of the period; in fact the stretch beside the Westfield that's now Melbourne Road, is marked as a continuation of Eglinton Place in the maps of 1897 and 1909. So one guesses it may have been a pretty short-lived idea.

SALTCOATS FISHERMEN CRITICISE ARDROSSAN LIFEBOAT MEN
While the Ardrossan lifeboat was out on inspection last Saturday (14 January 1899), one or two Saltcoats fishermen, waiting her return, made the time pass pleasantly and agreeably by subjecting boat crew, coxswain and committee to a raking criticism.

INTER-DEBATE ON THE HOUSE OF LORDS
On Monday evening (14 January 1901), in the Temperance Hotel, Saltcoats, an inter-debate took place between the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Literary Societies. Mr H M Murdoch, vice-president of the Saltcoats Society, occupied the chair and there was a good attendance of the members of both Societies.

BRITISH RESTAURANT

It was reported at the monthly meeting of the Ayrshire Education Committee yesterday that the Ministry of Food had offered the British Restaurant premises at Saltcoats to the Authority for use as a school dining hall. The organiser of the school meals and the architect reported that the premises were suitable and recommended that they should be secured for use by the pupils of Kyleshill Public School.

[I wonder what the premises were? We've discussed the British Restaurant in Ardrossan before but I don't think there has been any previous mention of premises in Saltcoats or Stevenston.]
