GLASGOW HERALD
27 FEBRUARY 1868

Sir,

THE MISSION COAST HOME, SALTCOATS

Will you be so kind as to acknowledge in the Herald the valuable subscription of £3 from the female power-loom workers in Messrs Walker, Birrell, & Company’s Works, Brook Street, Mile-End, in aid of “the Home” at Saltcoats – handed over to the subscriber, with kind expressions of confidence in “the Home,” by two of the managers, in presence of some members of a female committee chosen from among themselves for the purpose.

Also, the handsome sum of £5 from J. Renton, Esquire, Crosshill, for the addition to the house of separate apartments for scrofulous cases.

This being the only sum yet received for this most necessitous object, he feels himself compelled to stand still in the meantime.

Applications for admission are already far ahead of his ability to receive, but he cannot better himself.

Meanwhile he has to acknowledge subscriptions sent in every month, which will all appear in the report at the end of the year; but he does not feel himself warranted from funds which are sent in for the support of the present home to enlarge the house. He dare not run into debt. He makes no canvass for funds. He ever will endeavour to spend carefully all that may be entrusted unto him, but, however desirable, he can do no more.

Many thanks to subscribers. Your noticing of the above will greatly oblige, etc.,

James Smith, 2 Craignestock Place, Glasgow.

GLASGOW HERALD
2 MARCH 1916

NOTES ON OFFICERS – MR WILLIAM FREDERICK HUNTER CLARK

Official intimation has been received by his parents in Saltcoats of the death in Salonica through wounds of Second Lieutenant William Frederick Hunter Clark, Munster Fusiliers.

He was 22 years of age, and enlisted from Glasgow University, where he was studying, about a year ago. In March he obtained a commission in the Royal Scots Fusiliers, and later was transferred to the Munster Regiment.

Beginning his education in Saltcoats Public School, he won a bursary which enabled him to go to Ardrossan Academy. In 1913 he was dux medallist of the Academy, and winning another bursary proceeded to university. He was recognised as the cleverest pupil that the Academy had ever produced, and at the university he continued to add to his laurels. In 1914 he won first prize for French and first prize in the study of Alfred de Musset’s works. He also won the John Clark Mile-End Bursary for French in a competition, winning it over some Frenchmen.
