COUNCIL REFUSED SITES ON FARM

The Secretary of State for Scotland has rejected an application by Saltcoats Town Council to be allowed to purchase compulsorily 22 acres of farm land as a housing site.

The decision was given after he considered a report by a public inquiry into the Order which the Council proposed to promote.

The ground they sought to buy was on Dykesmains Farm, Saltcoats, and during the inquiry was described as some of the best farm land in the country.

The Order was opposed by the owners and tenants and the Secretary of State ordered a public inquiry last year.

The Council’s case was that they required the ground for the continuity of their housing programme. The objectors claimed that the Council could build as many houses on vacant sites and ground already owned as they could on Dykesmains.

The Secretary of State has also decided that the Council must bear the cost of the inquiry.
