GLASGOW HERALD
9 FEBRUARY 1966
TRAIN FARE-DODGERS FINED
Two special operations by British Railways to catch “fare-dodgers” resulted in 16 adults and five juveniles being charged yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court with defrauding British Railways of various sums of money.
Paisley Station was closed so that no one could get on a train without a ticket, and tickets were checked at St. Enoch.
Eleven adults pled guilty to charges resulting from this operation. In each case they had tendered 1s 4d as the fare at the barrier at St. Enoch Station, claiming to have travelled from Paisley.
In some cases they had travelled as far as Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston.

GLASGOW HERALD
13 FEBRUARY 1982
LIFE FOR DEAF MURDERER
William Mair, (37), who has been deaf since birth, was jailed for life at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday for the murder of his lover’s teenage daughter.
Helen Sinclair, (17), was asleep in bed with her mother in their home at Howat Crescent, Irvine, when Mair entered the darkened bedroom and lashed out with an iron bar. Only when he put on a light did Mair realise fully what he had done.
The girl died the next day from severe head injuries. Her mother, Mrs Yvonne Sinclair, (37), also suffered head injuries and can still remember nothing about that night.
The jury found Mair, of Giffen Road, Saltcoats, guilty of murdering Helen Sinclair and attempting to murder Yvonne Sinclair, who is also deaf and dumb, on October 25 last.
The judge, Lord Hunter, jailed him for eight years for attempted murder to run concurrently with a life sentence.

GLASGOW HERALD
15 FEBRUARY 1917
GLASGOW FISH FOR COAST TOWNS
At a meeting of Saltcoats Town Council, Councillor A. S. Miller, thought an attempt should be made to influence fishers to permit a proportion of their fish to be sold locally.
Recently there had been plentiful catches of fish in the firth, and the people living on the seaboard had been unable to buy them. The fish were despatched to Glasgow and sold in the market, and afterwards supplies were sent to Saltcoats and other towns. That meant double carriage.
The recommendation was adopted.
