MURDER COURT TOLD OF TALK AT MIDNIGHT

A young couple told a High Court murder trial yesterday that a friend who called at midnight to offer them gifts, including a refrigerator, TV set, and record player, suddenly poured out the story of how he had seen a man stabbed.

John Byrne, (27), and his wife, Margaret, (20), of James Miller Crescent, Saltcoats, were giving evidence on the first day of the trial of Joseph Jackson, (21), of 3 Arnott Place, Saltcoats, and Bernard Loughran, (26) of 6 Wallace Road, Irvine.

Both denied having murdered John Hill MacDonald, aged 43, a librarian, of Caswell Close, Farnborough, Hampshire, in his holiday flat at McIsaac Road, Saltcoats, on September 16/17 this year.

Both men also denied robbing MacDonald of items including a refrigerator, TV sets, and record player. They also denied taking MacDonald’s car.

The trial continues today.
