THE DEMAND FOR HOUSES

At a meeting of Saltcoats Town Council – Provost Christie presiding – a letter was read from Ardrossan Town Council agreeing to join in a representation to the Ministry of Munitions regarding the housing congestion in the district, with a view of securing for tenants employed locally dwelling-houses at present tenanted by parties having houses elsewhere.

A letter was also read from Stevenston Parish Council declining to join because there were no houses of that description in Stevenston.

Mr Kerr moved that a committee be appointed to sit along with Ardrossan Town Council.

Mr Auld moved an amendment that nothing further be done. The Ministry of Munitions had already declined to act.

Mr A. S. Millar seconded the amendment. At the previous meeting he had made his position clear that he would only favour a petition if the other two towns joined.

Mr Kerr urged the necessity of going ahead, because there were 20 families who would be evicted on May 26, and they had no houses to go to.

On a division the motion was carried, and Judge Ross, Messrs Douglas and Kerr were appointed.

HOLIDAY RESORT - SALTCOATS

Beautiful holiday weather has prevailed for some days past, but Friday morning was dull, and there were indications of a change. Some rain fell in the forenoon, after which the sun came out, and the remainder of the day was bright and warm. Enquiries for houses have been unusually numerous, and most of the available accommodation is already taken up. The bathing pond has been opened for the season, and bowlers are numerous since the green opened, the weekly competitions being specially popular.
