At Fawcett Cottage, Saltcoats, on Saturday, 30th March, John Mackintosh, spirit merchant, Renfrew, aged 52 years. Funeral to Ardrossan Cemetery on Tuesday at 1 o’clock.

SALTCOATS BOY SUFFOCATED

A distressing fatal accident occurred on Saturday afternoon at a refuse coup at Auchenharvie Colliery, Stevenston.

A number of lads were engaged searching for coal when one of them crept into a hole for the purpose of bringing out some coal. A quantity of loose earth fell and buried him. His companions failed to observe the accident, and some time afterwards a man passing saw the lad’s feet sticking out of the heap.

Assistance was obtained, and he was extricated, but life was extinct.

The body was identified as that of Andrew Park Anderson, (13), son of Archibald Anderson, miner, residing at 7 Arthur Street, Saltcoats.

GOLF COURSE FOR ARDROSSAN AND SALTCOATS

The proposed course for Ardrossan and Saltcoats has now taken definite shape by the formation of a company to carry the scheme through.

The course is on the farms of Laigh Dykes and Dykes Mains belonging to the Earl of Eglinton. It is situated immediately behind the two towns, abutting the Caledonian Railway Station at Saltcoats and within four minutes’ walk from South Beach Station on the Glasgow & South-Western Railway.

The ground acquired extends to 90 acres, giving plenty of accommodation for an 18-hole course.

Ben Sayers, of North Berwick, inspected it at the request of the promoters, and gave a very favourable report.

The capital of the new company will be at least £2,500, and this sum has already been subscribed or guaranteed.

RIVER CLYDE RESCUE

About 10 o’clock on Saturday night, a middle-aged woman, fell over the breast of the quay, at the bend on the south side of the river, a little above Todd & McGregor’s Works.

The cry for assistance caught the ear of a young sailor, Robert Crawford, of Saltcoats, mate of the schooner, ALERT, Sligo trader, and he, with the most praiseworthy alacrity, sprung forward, unmoored a boat, and caught the body of the woman as she was sinking to rise no more.

She was taken to the Gorbals Police Establishment, where, we are glad to say, she was brought about.

ASSAULT

At Saltcoats Burgh Court yesterday - before Bailie Christie - Thomas Campbell, (28), 11 Clyde Street, Port Dundas, Glasgow, was charged with assaulting James Murray, Carriage Hirer, Saltcoats, by striking him on the head with a drum major's staff and inflicting serious injuries.

It appears that Campbell was leader of St. Rollox Thistle Flute Band, and on Monday the band, accompanied by a large number of excursionists, were parading the streets of Saltcoats.

In the evening, while returning to the station, Mr Murray was standing at his stance, and before he could get clear he was struck twice on the head with the staff and knocked down. He had to be driven to Dr. Turner's house where his head was stitched.

After the assault the police attempted to apprehend accused at the Glasgow & South-Western Railway Station, but he escaped in the crowd by removing part of his uniform.

On Tuesday he was arrested in Frith Street, Glasgow, by Sergeant Lyle, Saltcoats, and a constable in plain clothes.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 60 days’ imprisonment.
