Hi. My name is Jim Paterson and I was born in Stevenston in 1957. I lived there until I went to Strathclyde Uni and then on to Bermuda then the USA where we currently reside. I am interested in finding out more about the old Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston since both my parents are now deceased and I would like to fill in some gaps. I am also currently researching the Paterson side of the family. I am stuck with my ancestor, John Paterson who emigrated from Ireland to Kilbirnie in the 1800s. I believe they lived on Markey Row which no longer exists. Look forward to corresponding with everyone.

Thanks for the response. We believe he lived in Markey Row which, from what I understand, was torn down in the 90s. This definitely helps and we are now trying to find out when he emigrated from Ireland. There are a lot of John Patersons born in Ireland in 1828 and trying to find the right one is challenging.

These were the only Patersons I could find living in Markey Row.
Perhaps these details from his marriage certificate can help you find out if he is the correct one:

Marriage according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church of Scotland, 18th May 1855 at Glengarnock, parish of Kilbirnie-
John Paterson, Glengarnock, age 27, furnace keeper, bachelor, born 1827 County of Monaghan (no town mentioned), father John Paterson, labourer, mother Sarah Paterson (no maiden name given).
Mary Anna Douglas McConnachie, Glengarnock, age 24, net weaver, spinster, born 1831 Ardrossan Ayrshire, father Richard McConnachie, labourer, mother Barbara McConnachie (no maiden name given).

Hello, I'm from Paisley originally but while researching the family tree it seems that my great grandfather ended up up in Stevenston.
His 1899 death certificate says he was a wines and spirits merchant.
His name was James Winning and when he married in Paisley he was a Baker.
Any info on James Winning or his wife Elizabeth would be appreciated as I can't find any info on him using these occupations.
According to the death certificate he was at Fullarton Place. Not sure if that was business premises or his home?

STEVENSTON - BOY KILLED

Yesterday forenoon James Winning, seven years of age, son of James Winning, Restaurateur, Shore Road, Stevenston, was found lying on a branch line of the Caledonian Railway, having been run over by some waggons which were being shunted.

He was so severely injured he died several hours afterwards.

[The family intimation in the 28 December 1900 edition of the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald indicates that young James was the son of James and Jessie Winning, Station Restaurant, Shore Road.]

Yes thank you for that. Strange that his wife died just a fw months later. We'll look into that.
Is the Cross Keys still standing? He died of Sclerosis of the Liver so I assume he was in there a lot.
