Charles Duguid & Son (Saltcoats and Australia)

Post by georgersweir »

Earlier, in her tour of Saltcoats, Susan made this passing comment
down south wrote:... While looking for Saltcoats streets named after political figures, I've just come across the street name Duguid Drive ( a cul-de-sac off Ivanhoe Drive ), which most probably is named for Mr Duguid the headmaster.
Charles Duguid, who was headmaster of Saltcoats Academy, took up the post at the age of twenty-six, after leaving his home village of Bucksburn in Aberdeenshire to attend Edinburgh University and Edinburgh Teachers' Training College. He appears to be the first in the line of Saltcoats' Duguids and may indeed be the person after whom Duguid Drive, in Saltcoats is named. Incidentally, he married Jane Snodgrass Kinnier the second daughter of Dr. Robert Snodgrass Kinnier also of Saltcoats. There has been recent mention of this doctor in connection with the Saltcoats Mission Coast Home.

A second possibility is that the street was named after the son of Charles Duguid (also called Charles), who had a distinguished career as a doctor and as a defender of aboriginal rights, in Australia. This Duguid from Saltcoats (6 April 1884 – 5 December 1986), was awarded an OBE in 1970 for his work with Aborigines. His biography makes interesting reading. A brief outline is available at Wikipedia and from the Australian Dictionary of Biography. There is a photograph of Charles Duguid at this National Museum of Australia site (although they manage to give his place of birth incorrectly as Glasgow rather than Saltcoats).

One further mention of this Dr Charles Duguid comes from the Rootsweb email archives, where our very own Hughie McCallum recounted the following A&SH story of 1948:
Sixteen and a half-year-old Walter Ferguson, a cadet in the "Scottish Monarch," while in Adelaide, Australia, last month visited a church there. To Walter's surprise he met Dr Duguid, a native of Saltcoats, whose father was headmaster of Ardrossan Academy and whose grandfather was Dr Kinnear,Saltcoats. Walter was proud to reveal to Dr Duguid that his father Jim Ferguson, his grandfather, the late Walter Ferguson and his grandmother
Mrs Kate Ferguson, at present residing at Scotstoun, were all natives of Saltcoats. Young Walter was thrilled at meeting someone from Saltcoats so far away from home.
Finally, Charles Duguid's autobiography, 'Doctor and the Aborigines' (published in 1972), includes some insightful descriptions of life in Saltcoats (and Glasgow) in the early 1900s.
I'm still saving up for a signature.

My Dad did some home alterations for the Duguids in Saltcoats and when we arrived in Adelaide Dr Duguid insisted Mum and Dad attend a couple of Society functions and treated them as honoured guests. Dad however was a bit of an inverted snob and did not keep up with the friendship offered as he felt out of place in such exalted company. Wee Ali

That'a a fascinating piece of research you've come up with for us, George. The union of the families of two of the most prominent citizens in public service in nineteenth century Saltcoats, producing such a thoroughly worthy descendant.

The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald BDM database shows that Charles Duguid, then living in Eglinton Street, Saltcoats, intimated the birth of a son in the newspaper edition of 11/4/1884, obviously the birth of Charles, Junior. This was followed by the birth of a girl, intimated in the edition of 21/1/1887.

There are further intimations of births by presumably the same Charles Duguid from Winton Cottage, Saltcoats - (a girl 21.12/88) - and from 'Balgowrie, Caledonia Road, Saltcoats - (3 boys on 29/9/1893, 30/8/1895 and 17/6/1898 respectively).

The database later reflects intimations of family events in Australia.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

Charles Duguid (the younger) was born in Saltcoats in 1884. In his autobiography (Doctor and the Aborigines), he describes some of the local characters of Saltcoats - characters I guess we would call 'worthies':
One of them was Paddy Mitchell, who called at our door with an egg in his hand and asked my mother to boil it for him. She did.
...
An old rascal known as Red Hot was a terror to us boys. His name came either from the heat of his temper or the colour of his hair. He lived by catching hen sparrows, painting them yellow, and selling them as canaries. "That's no' a canary you have in that cage. It's just a spug," I yelled at him one day, then dodged for my life as he lunged forward with his stick.
I'm still saving up for a signature.

Interesting post. Hughie will no doubt remember Miss Duguid, who was headmistress of Winton Primary school in the late 1940's. Never heard that name again locally other than Duguid Drive. Could there be a family connection? Cheers, A.B.

Hi, George, the "50years ago" column of A&S Herald dated 15 Feb '63 has this to say:-"One of Saltcoats's most distinguished sons, Dr charles Duguid, whose home is in Kent Town, South Australia, and who has made a lifelong study of the Aborigines, has an important appointment in Glasgow on Wednesday,June 26th, when he will present the prizes and give the valedictory address at the closing ceremony of Glasgow High School, of which he is a former pupil. Dr Duguid's father was the first headmaster of Ardrossan Academy, where the doctor recieved his early education. After qualifying as a doctor and working at Glasgow Western Infirmary he went to Australia in 1912 and has travelled extensively in that country." Hoping this is of some use to you. Cheers, A.B.
