(6) "Having care of any cart or carriage, does not have and use bridles and reins with bits sufficient to enable him to regulate the speed of the horse or other animal drawing the same; or who, not using bridle or reins, does not walk on the causeway close to the side of the animal drawing such cart or carriage (or to the side of the first of such animals, if there be more than one), or who rides on the shaft thereof, and in such a position as readily to see immediately before and on either side thereof, or who is at such a distance from such cart or carriage or in such a position thereon, as not to have due control."

This brought back memories of seeing Mary Howie sitting on the shaft of her vegetable cart in the 50's, presumably not enjoying the greater sightlines she would achieve by climbing up on to the cart itself every time she was ready to move off. I also vividly recall her horse proceeding on its own, Mary walking ahead or behind, shouting - "Carrot, Turnip, Leek and Parsley".

Imagine however, Glasgow Street, Dockhead Street or New Street packed with horses and carts in 1892 and no discipline!

Was there anyone other than Mary and Wullie Howie trading in the 50's onward with horse and cart?

Penny Tray wrote:(5) Slaughters any cattle or dresses any part thereof, except in the case of any cattle over-driven, or which may have met with any accident, and which, for the public safety or other reasonable cause, ought to be killed on the spot.

Little Plum, this sub-section introduces "dresses" yet again and maybe suggests that it could also have something to do with preparing a carcase for human consumption.
I think the word "dresses" has two meanings here. First it's mentioned between "cleans" and "exercises" and that must mean smoothing the horse's coat (after cleaning) with a curry-comb.
The second time, as you said, PT, it apparently means cutting the carcase up ready for sale.

Hi PT,Did Ballantyne not have a shop at the foot of St Margarets Rd., I think it was Tommy or Sanny, well it was their Father that had a yard at the top of Wellpark Rd and went around with the horse before he got the van.Sam.

Sam,

You're ringing another bell! Did they not go round the schemes in the 60's with a converted shop/bus?

(7) "At the same time drives more than two carts or carriages; and while driving two carts or carriages, has not the halter of the horse in the last cart or carriage securely fastened to the back of the first cart or carriage, or has such halter of a greater length from such fastening to the horse's head than four feet, or who does not otherwise securely retain control by means of a halter over the horse in the second cart of the carriage."

The mind boggles!

(8) "Rides or drives furiously, recklessly, or carlessly, any horse attached to a cart or carriage, or drives furiously, recklessly, or carelessly, any animal."

When considering what other animals might be ridden or driven in such style its interesting to note that the current Road Traffic Act still recognises sheep, horses, assess, mules, pigs, oxen, goats and dogs!
