Occupation

Post by bigbob61 »

I've found several female occupations in the 1841 Stevenston census listings as "sewer" . Is this job working in the sewers or was this a seamstress?

Thanks for a great website!

Hi Big Bob,

I can remember having the exact same thoughts when I first looked at the census films. But then there were no sewers in those days, they were all dry toilets - maybe that's why the Ayrshire tatties tasted better  - well, that and the seaweed they used from the shore.

In the censuses many women in the district were listed as muslin sewers, hand sewers or just sewers. Ayrshire was quite famous for its muslin sewers. I remember seeing a christening gown from that period, might have been in the North Ayrshire Museum in Saltcoats.

There was an article in a magazine (Scotslinks I think) some years ago written about someones ancestor from Ardrossan who was a "Muslin Sewer". be nice to find that again.
