Wonder if this of any help John:
From the 1904 Herald Files:
Mr john Adams, third son of Mr Adams, Burgh Factor, Ardrossan has commenced business on his own account as an architect in Kroonstadt, Orange River Colony, South Africa.

Ann and Hugh,

thanks very much for this.

I have a friend here in Holland called Allan Poot, who comes from S.A. He only knows that his grandmother, (possibly g-gr-mother) came from Ardrossan. He asked me if I could find anything for him.The details I gave were all that he had.

I will pass this on to him. Again, thanks a million. Allan will be very pleased. Up till now they had no background at all.

Hi Ann,
I don't know if you can help with an address on the 1871 census. My great grandfather is Bernard McGrattan and he is married to Maria, 3 children listed Patrick 6 mths Esther 5 and Ellen 6mths?? (twins) but I cannot makeout the address and I am not familiar with the area (does it still exist)

The 1881 census shows the twins Patrick now 13 and Ellen 10, mam and dad ages change as well

I am now trying to find out if Ellen died and a later daughter also became Ellen

Thanks
Brian, Tillicoultry

Hi Brian,
It looks like the address on the 1871 Census is Chapwell No. 5 (Buswir Close)??? Saltcoats, Ayr. I'm sorry I can't help more with the address as I live in Canada.

Thanks Ann, I will see what more I can find by posting a note on the Threetowers wesite

I did not realise you lived in Canada, the power of the internet with us all sat in our own rooms communicating around around the world.

My wife and I had 3 weeks in Canada in Sept in New Brunswick, Nova scotia and PEI, we love Canada.

I am also trying to find where my other G Grandfather was living in 1901, William Sloan, b circa 1861 in Ireland he would be a widower in 1901 when his wife Agnes died in Jan 1897 they were living in Coatbridge, children are;
Edward b 1885
John b 1887
William b 1890
Robert b1894
Agnes b1896

Thanks
Brian PS pretty cold in Scotland at the moment -10c

Edward Sloan - son - 15

NO mention of William Sloan - perhaps deceased?????

Thanks again, William must have been staying someplace else he did not die until 1950, a really interesting bit of info is that Agnes 4 is at home, I always understood that she had been brought up in a convent/orphanage, her daughter Annie (83) is still alive and I keep in regular touch she lives in kilmarnock, Agnes birthplace listed as Calder but I have her birth cert and she was born in Calder House, Coatbridge. I cannot find any place in Ireland called Irglass perhaps this is similar to Calder?

The 3 oldest boys are all born in England, William in 1890, Robert b1894 in Lugar near Cumnock, Scotland. I wonder when the family moved to Scotland, do they appear on the 1891 Scottish census, if so what was the wife Agnes occupation. We were told she was a teacher but I find this odd because her husband William cannot even write his own name. Amazing trying to read between the lines.

We stayed for 3 weeks in Stratford, Ontario 2004, also a friend in Toronto who we have visited a number of times.

Brian mild and raining today
